    Default Curing

Hi guys, hope everyone is well!

So I’ve done my first grow, got 3 nice plants out of it. Unfortunately lost about half of the harvest to mould but have still got a decent amount to play around with, question I have is as follows:

Dried the buds fine, last night I placed them in mason jars & shut the lids, did my first Burp this morning & noticed that the buds had gone from nice dry buds to spongy. When dried they were not crumbly but you could rub them in your fingers and it would almost grind itself, now they roll in the fingers and don’t “crumble”. Is this right? How should the finish product be? When smoking before I haven’t really taken notice but now It’s from my own grow I’m a bit concerned.

How should the buds feel when curing? Should they regain some moisture and feel squishy again?

    Thanks all,
    BM.

Squezze your bud, and if it fells soft in the middle, than every thing is just find. The buds dry from inside out, and will fell A little wet when squezze together You need to burp several times A day for first couple of weeks, then take out and dry before smoking. JMO

If they seem a bit too wet after a few days get them out and let them have a few hours in the open again and then back into the jars.

Place an RH meter inside the jar. 55-65 % is what you’re looking for. It takes the guess work out

    Hi,
So I open up 200g from a vaccumsealed bag and let it breath a bit, It has been 2 days the weed has been in mason jars and it has a really good smell to it, Lemon smell. It gives away a really really skunk smell.

So the problem is that its feels a bit wet, maybe its the oil I don't know. When I press a nugg its soft like its wet, and when I smoke its to soft in the throat like I did not feel anything in my throat. So I didn't feel anything the first 30-40min but then I felt it, It had a Sativa feeling not to much just a little bit, And I just felt it in my head nothing in my body. So what do you say? What should I do.

    Thanks.

I'd get an hydrometer inside if your not sure good to see the buds bounce back after a little squeeze . What the stems like when bent?.
. Keep burping to get the jar to 64 rh fi jar rh low leave closed for a few days

Most of my drying and burping has been done in my cellar, which is ~RH80%. I once left a data logger in a jar that had been fully burped and it read RH60%. idk how the physics works on that but it seems like the bud has a natural RH% to end up at. If we let it.

With the humidity being high, it would take close to 14 days to dry in the cellar even though I trim wet. Those with low humidity often use brown paper bags to slow down the drying process. Between 7 to 14 days to get to dry gives good results.

To judge the dryness, I bend the stems. If it is squeezy/squishy, it's not dry yet. What I go for is there being some snap to the stem without it snapping off. Then it's ready to be burped. Jars half full, 24 hours with closed lids, 24 hours with lids open. Repeat as necessary. When they first go into the jars, they stick together like gobs of green snot. The burping is done when they free flow like marbles.

I had a different problem with my last grow, which was dried where they grew, my hall cupboard. I only had an 8" fan for the build. Even slowed to 40%, it's close to 3 exchanges of air a minute. The outside of the buds were crispy dry after 4 days. I jarred them up for 24 hours and that got a lot of moisture from the inside to the outside of the buds. From then on, with the buds back in the hanging baskets, I had the fan off and the door ajar. When the odour in the hall got bad enough, I ran the fan for 5 minutes. 5 hours off, 5 minutes on had them dry enough to burp in a few more days.

You really need keep an eye on your bud mate if you got it in jars and the RH is to high you could get grot in there, if the hygrometer is reading above 70% take it all out and lie it on a piece of cardboard or paper for an hour or two then back in the jar and keep checking the RH they say the perfect smoke is 62% i personally like 64%, if the room you are curing in has a high RH you gotta try and get it down as if your room is 80% RH your gonna be wasting your time burping jars, good luck matey.

My cellar is too large to even think about using a dehumidifier. It's the same floor area as the house, which is one of those 'Upstairs Downstairs' type houses converted to flats. When shifting tons of builders rubble to make one of the cellar rooms useable, I got down to the original kitchen tiles. Sadly not a complete floor, lots of tiles missing. Once I had it level, it got a floor of paving stones.

I had a 6" fan running all the time, even when not growing and imo it was the air movement that allowed me to dry bud down there. I needed to be extra vigilant during the last few weeks of a grow and would lose some to mould almost every grow. Any mould I'd missed got identified when trimming. When in the hanging baskets, I'd gently turn the buds every day. The burping was done with the jars on the floor.

If I ever grow in the cellar again, I'll take regular temp/RH reading while they're drying and burping.
