Default More unnecessary questions about hydrometer & Bovida packs when curing

    Ayeo

I picked up a dozen of the mini hydrometers and some boveda two way packs.
I've been curing for 2 weeks and wondered if I throw the hydrometers with the boveda packs in now.

Assuming yes, but was also thinking it might be too soon.
Reading about issues with boveda packs and that they can rob the smell from the buds if done too long etc..

Please chime in and let me know if there is a best practice for using the Boveda in jars at two weeks into the curing process.

    Many thanks!

I've only used boveda packs before curing. I use them to stabilise the RH and then remove them. In a good jar the RH will not alter once you have it where you want it. I like 62% so I dry the weed and while in burping the packs go in.

I'm not saying that's the right way to do it but it's the way I've been doing it for a few grows now.

A lot of guys have switched away from the 62% bovada's in favor of the 58%. You seem to get a lot better terpene retention with the 58%.

I think it all depends on where you live. If youre in a damp location then the 58 will work better. Imho the dryer, the less terpenes but again, thats based on your local climate.

I also heard 58 for spliffs, 62 for vape

I remember drying bud on top of the TV vents years back. That would have been 20/dust lol but still did the job.

Yeah - must admit, I dried 12oz in an airing cupboard overnight once and it was a great smoke.

    Thanks J.!

    I ordered the 62's in size 4 & 8, it's pretty dry here with the Midwest fall/winters.
The 8's are on back order, but I popped in the hydrometers in a few and the boveda #4's in all mason jars, 2 #4's for the 32 oz and 1 #4 in the 16 ounce jars.

I set the hydrometers were pretty spot on overall. An hour in the jars & the ranges were 50% to 79% RH.

Even though they're 2 way, should I dump the higher RH jars in a box to dry a bit more? Or will the packs really work after a week as they state?
Will daily 30 min burping still be OK? Or cut that out all together now that the Boveda packs are in?
I'm not too concerned about the boveda's lifespan if I should burp, but wondering what's best overall.

As always, thanks for the information!

You definitely want to dry those out that are above 70 above 68 even. The biggest drawback to the bovada pack is it will take your relative humidity down where it needs to be if it's too high, but it'll make the cure take so long that it'll just kind of brown out your weed over time. So you want to have the humidity low by the time you put that bovada pack in, ideally about 64 or 65 or less.

I'll take those jars that average over 70% out of the jars and lay the buds in a cardboard box for an hour or so to see how they adjust.

    Thanks,

When curing buds under 58% RH, should those get burped 1x per week, or daily?

If they stay under 58%, they're done. I usually try and get a stable 62% and then I'll do an odd burp here or there. But when I get down to 58 I usually don't have to burp at all.

    Nice to hear, thanks !

Today is day 14 of the cure. I could have easily over dried during the initial hanging, but looking to elevate the RH to 58% to 62% to ensure its in that recommended range. Going to be watching this daily and relying on the two way Boveda packs to get me there.
