Default Side and Top Lighting With Foldable Bar Style LEDs

    Hey All:

I am in the process of designing tent layout and am very interested in if anyone has used any of the LED bar lights that fold and hung them in an L shape so that they use half of the light for the side and half of the light for the top. I saw on a popular YouTube channel JustInTime2Grow where he hung the ROI-e480 in an L shape, and I've searched to find other examples, but haven't found it. After seeing that I'm wondering if you can hang any of the other lights that fold in this kind of layout or just the ROIs from Grower's choice. I assume you can, but sure didn't want to just rely on that.

If it is possible I would like to put up 2 ROI-e720s and 2 ChilLED Growcraft x6 1000w in a 10X10 tent. I would use an 8.5x10 of the tent, and mount the ROI-e720s on the side that was 1.5 feet off from the canopy so that the side lighting and the half of the bar would cover the 3.5 feet of the top. The ChilLED Growcraft x6s would then be hung to cover the 5x10 remaining area.

My goal is to maximize my yield (I plan on topping and ScrOGging) while also providing different spectrums. Spectrum varibility was the primary reason I chose the ChilLED Growcrafts, and I'm not sure I'm in love with the base spectrum of ROI so if I can use other foldable bar lights in this configuration I may choose another light with a spectrum I like better.

    What's the communities thoughts?

    Thanks for the help.

I like your approach! Do you have a sketch that might help us see your design a bit more easily?

Looks like you are after quality equipment - have you looked at forum sponsors budgetled or HLG(vividled)?

In my experience, you wont beat HLG. You will need just shy of 7000ppf to cover the 10x10 - 2520w of top spec led

Im not a big believer in side lighting vs just a well designed consistent canopy coverage.

Thank you for your insight gardro. I haven't sketched anything out yet, but I will do that and post it.

Yeah, coming form the CMH and HPS lights I used in the 90s to the LEDs I can see it's a big change all the way around to managing the environment. Funny you said HLG, because I thought of 2 HLG 650Rs before I saw the ROI hung folded in half. Do your or anyone have experience with HLG 650R Diablo Scorpion and what do you think about it?

For the side lighting is your your belief of just consistent canopy coverage over side lighting based actual testing yourself personally, or is it just your preference based on what you do and have seen other do? My thought is until I get my feet wet gardening again I need to try anything to help the lower parts I keep instead of me relying on getting a really even canopy early on. LOL! I guess I'm just trying to account for the mistakes I'm sure to make early on, as well as make it so in my mind I don't have to be as nervous about my current plant training skills (lack of it that is) and overdo it training. I would sure as hell love for it to be a bike that you get on and just ride, but, after 25 years and with all the technology changes it's definitely a lot to digest. Overall that's the train of thought I'm coming from. That said, I don't see ANYONE hanging them the way I'm asking about. Also, while I see the individual strips for side lighting I don't see many people using them so I figured maybe it's because 1 wasn't much, but x3 what would that do?

Thanks a lot for responding and giving me more to think about.

Scorpions are slick. They are great for low ceilings ( 12inch light to canopy ) so if you have good head room, 650R is the way forward when you look at cost.

Plants grow most vigorously vertically. Side lighting will work in little grow cabinets etc where theres no other options but lights, perpendicular and plumb work the best.

Thanks gardro. After going down the rabbit hole I decide on 4 of the ChilLED Growcraft X6 – 600 Watt. They cover the way I want at the height I want as long as I can still get the spectrum controller that is, because I definitely want to at least play around with that. I know I can add some UV, and swap out lights as in the Horticulture Lighting Group HLG 600 V2 BSpec Full-Spectrum 600W, but would like to just keep it simple with just one type of light for all phases. The Scorpion sure looks nice for that, but the ChilLED Growcrafts have a really nice even spread that seems better than the Scorpion.

Seems like it's hard to go wrong with the HLG, ChilLED, Growers Choice ROI levels of LEDs so it should work out. I will definitely keep it documented and post about it. I'm going to draw up my grow room design and then see what the group thinks about it.

    Thanks for the hlep.

I had a feeling you would, more diy kit sort of route. Any 900 dollar light going to be pretty good. Look forward to seeing your diary.
