I did dwc for a few years. It was a good option back when hid lights were far less efficient than now. I never could keep the pH stable as the res was too small. Bigger the airpump, better the veg growth, at the expense of more noise. A few months into trying passive hydro and I knew that I'd never do dwc again. Far less hassle in return for an extra week or so of veg time.
Apart from soil, a good option for you imo would be hempy buckets. They need feeding every day until the roots are established but then feeding every 2 days is fine. Can even leave them for 4 or 5 days if you really have to. They might not be best pleased upon your return but they'll recover within a few days of regular feeding.
By following the very simple instructions, any newbie can get a good yield with hempy buckets.
