Default What is the secrete to tight buds (vs. airy buds)

    Ayeo!

So bummed I'm not currently growing at the moment. I've prepped my 4x4 & 3x5 tents for my next grow, its just too damn cold though to waste energy trying to keep temps at 75F.

My last grow went very well once I got things in order. But I do want to improve overall and wanted to understand if there's a good process for ensuring tight buds, especially after drying & curing.

I was rolling up a bunch of cones yesterday to pass some time, the strain is Kryptonite, its a 50% 50% hybrid, Sativa dominant. When they were harvested, the buds were fairly dense medium in size. But after they dried & cured, I noticed they were airy overall. No density to them.

The grow period in flower was very long. Popped 3/19 harvested 10/20 - Yes, a Covid-19 grow. I vegged too long, wont make that mistake again, but. I also had lots of light issues which prolonged everything, but ultimately its some of the best smoke I've ever had, so CHEERS to growing your own!

But to the question, what are the best techniques for growing tight dense buds and harvesting them in that same fashion? I am using decent genetics, not random bag seed anyway, but I want to figure it out with this upcoming grow. Please share your master growing secrets to tighter buds.

    Thanks!

Hey toughcall. Could be due to a few things really. Not enough light, drying out too quick, temps genetics maybe.

What type of light do you use?

I've had rock tight buds under Led, but this grow I've got 3 that have all been under hps and are that hard there isn't even any squish or bounce back to em

They need to be hard rock when still on the plant.. with time you will be able to tell even before harvest. You will get fairly dense buds regardless to strain when you get your growing skills to a good level

Better soil, bigger pots, and like MC said lighting. Don't know about the Coco thing.

What is the secret to tight buds?

    Give up some yield.

A 600w hps will just about cover 4'x4'. 37.5w psf.

Reduce the space to 3'x3' and it's 67w psf. The buds will be harder and the total yield will be less.

In general indica buds will be tighter than sativa.

Great feedback. Give up yield. = I did push the Spider Farmer SP4000 when flowering in a 4x4 tent definitely could have had better coverage with less plants (5 initially, 3 was better, 2 seems best especially w/LST for yield.

Dried too quickly. = I should have run my humidifier on day 1 of drying. In the 3 days total of dry time, they dried too fast, had to rehydrate bc I at too low of humidity.

Thanks again for the help. I can't wait till the end of February, early March to begin my next attic grow. I have two tents, 4x4 & 3x5. I'll focus on two per tent, take a better approach to drying after the chop.

The smoke is amazing, but it's a constant reminder when I'm grinding my airy buds, to do better on the next round.

    Cheers!
