Default Echotechnics controller causing rvk hum

Having a few issues with this new rvk fan, I've just upgraded to a 6inch L1 and rhino Pro filter for my extraction.

I've noticed the rvk is very quiet at full speed compared with my cheaper 6inch Fan it's replaced however any thing under 40% and the rvk hums which isn't going to work with what i wanted.

Is this what will happen with any controller?
Do I just suck it up and run the fans at 40%?

Do i drop in a small 4inch fan and filter and run that at 100% to create the negative air pressure while setting my controller to bring in the rvk when temps get High?

Im thinking that running fans at that high of a percentage at this time of year in the UK will pull more cold air in meaning my heater will be working harder and thus using more electric!

My room is just about ready but need to sort this little niggle out first.

    Cheers

I dont use a controller on my 5" just have it full blast all the time and run just a passive intake. I do have a friend who runs an smscom hybrid on his 5" and his rvk did humm. Found the bearing had leaked, replaced and now its silent. This is on setting 2 of 5. Guessing being new the bearing should be ok, but without opening it up to inspect you won't know for sure

It's more an electrical hum to a mechanical noise?
Would a failed bearing not show signs at full speed?

I'm going to email the company i bought it off and see what they come up with.

    Cheers

I tend to find that once you drop below around 50% speed then they hum - I think a variac controller would help but I'd wait for someone with more knowledge....

Nature of the beast, harmonics start ringing in the metal of the motor. A transformer/ heavy type controller like MC said would help or start looking at EC/DC fans that are happier at low speeds.

Thanx for that, I'll have a quick price of the parts later see what it's coming in at.

Think a cheap half decent hybrid controller is £180

Yeah cant get a cheap hybrid, a lot expensive parts. Id go for a stepped transformer type as you get more control. Some just switch between high speed and low speed

fwir, extractor fans can overheat if you run them at less than 40% of mains power. Not enough airflow to keep them cool.
