The next question Mac is for a given DLI what is more optimal:
higher ppfd and slightly less hours
or slightly less ppfd and more hours.

hmmm both have pro's and cons such as being able to control environment better with longer hours less ppfd but save money with less hours more ppfd etc
If all the other variables were equal i'd say higher ppfd less hours purely for saving money long term on the leccy bill.
Guess it depends on the plant ultimately, if shes upright 24/7 like a pornstar then more hours as she's using it, if shes dropping for a couple hours a day drop the hours hours and increase the ppfd. Finding that balance I guess is the end goal.
(I've had a smoke and my brain is whirring now with this, please don't hesitate tell me if I am wrong, I really want to understand all this stuff better )
NO SELL, NO SMELL, NO TELL!!!

This is an interesting topic!
The greater the intensity, the less photosynthesis we get per photon. At too high levels, light will be dissipated as heat instead via NPQ.
But at the same time, some plants need a good rest at night and this should be taken into account as well. For most plants, which we rarely grow near the maximum level (long photoperiod), a longer photoperiod with less intense light is more beneficial. On the other hand, we're almost always trying to grow cannabis near the maximum, both in terms of intensity and length of photoperiod. At some point, the daily period of darkness has a value that trumps more hours of light.
Quoting the last part of Royal Queen Seeds' article - The Importance of the Dark Cycle in Cannabis Cultivation:
"DO AUTOFLOWERING CANNABIS PLANTS NEED A DARK CYCLE?
The short answer is yes with an “if”, and no with a “but”. If you want the highest potency and maximum yield, we suggest adopting either an 18-6 or 20-4 light-dark cycle. But should you run lights 24-0 indoors, your plants and all of your equipment like fans will be pushed to the limit as well. So far, 24-0 auto crops have failed to outperform those cultivated with dark cycles of 4–6 hours. There really is power on the dark side of the force."
