Default Attempt at a pot riser/run off tray type thing

Pardon the hack craftsmanship and dungeonous cellar.

    The frame is scrap 1x3" from a friend; around 3-1/2' x 3-1/2' (101cm x 101cm). Glued and screwed.
The 1/4" panel cost about $5
The galvanized metal mesh (hardware fabric apparently) was $20
Used silicone caulking liberally on all seams. Impasto!
Duct tape used to pad the pointy edges of the screen. Definitely would have shredded the tent.
Painted with black oil paint. Probably unnecessary. Hopefully not harmful? Hides the hackery.

I wanted to make something so the plants could sit level while the runoff could still be directed to one spot to be hoovered up. Didn't quite nail it on this go around. Spawned plenty of ideas for a redo at some point.

The frame/screen sit -almost- level while the panel below the screen curves and slopes to one end. I made the slope too steep at the start, so it levels out a bit early. As a result the back was shimmed up about 5/8"(1.6cm) to compensate...

I used screws sort of like brackets to support the ends of the dowels. Dab of wood glue as well.

The screen was stapled around the edges of the frame; tried keeping as much tension as possible, but ended up with some slack. It holds up decently, it's just that the clearance is pretty slim toward the back (where the higher area of the slope approaches the screen). Pots placed there wouldn't be resting in water, but they might press into the panel. Still thinking on the cheapest/simplest way to gain a touch more clearance and rigidity there. I'm in a conceptual block thinking all the world's problems can be solved with dowels.

There's also an access hole in the screen for a wet-vac hose. Starting to wonder if I could work a pump into this thing.

As it stands now: Spent around $45; already had some of the materials. Only lose about 2" in height (with sag); very happy with that. It can hold around 9G/34L of water.....for about 20 minutes.....once....so far.

I must say a lovely bit of work, i only personal fecked about with soil for two grows i simply don’t have the room this was made incredibly clear to me when it came to doing the joyful task that is flushing out the pots. The amount of mess i made and water that i got everywhere inside my little closet was just not worth the time or effort. So i can honestly say that your little bit of handy work will definitely be a god send for quite a number of soil growers that are like myself ( one mess making fuckwit )

Top job fella, love seeing DIY/upcycling like this. #stonerengineering

for the sagging ... got an old 5 gall plastic bucket? cut the bottom off to the depth required, riddle it with holes and put it bottom up in the middle of the tray under the screen. Rigid plastic supports the screen, the holes allow the water to drain to the tray still

NO SELL, NO SMELL, NO TELL!!!

Thanks, Skunkpunch. I'm still calling this the rough draft, but it seems it might spare me from some sort of bedroom tsunami.

Thanks, Mac. Was almost gonna post in your upcycling thread, but thought I used too manly newly purchased materials.
I like the bucket idea; you got me thinking I could get a similar function out of the left over metal.

The stuff is very rigid when rolled into a cylinder. I'd just have to cut the bottom end to match the slope so the cylinder(s) sit at 90 degrees.
With a few snips I should be able to flange out the bottom just enough to be able to staple it in place and dab it with silicone.
Thinking 2 or 3 of those run across the back might do the trick. Maybe make 'em a bit greater in diameter than shown in the pics. Might not even need the dowels if I have enough metal left.

Just gotta cut the duct tape and pull some staples to get access.....rushed to the finish line. lol

Thanks for the input, guys. Will make some tweaks over the coming days.

    Thanks, CannaBug.
I'm diggin' the DIY. So many possible solutions to different challenges.

Put in a little work today. Ditched the dowels. Made the metal columns. Added another round of silicone on the seams and on the new screw holes.

The screws seemed the easiest way to keep the columns from shifting.
The middle one has been replaced since these pics; slightly taller and less raggedy.

Was thinking I should have went with a bigger column diameter, but I tested each area with a full 5G/19L bucket of paint and everything held fine while the buckets stayed nice and level. No bottoming out.

Just letting the caulking cure before touching up the paint and reapplying duct tape to the edges.

Is adding a pump to this as simple as it seems? Submersible pump with intake tube weighted/affixed to the deep end of bottom panel. Output hose run out the tent, out the window. Plug the pump into a multi-outlet strip with a power switch. No floats/switches needed, right? Appreciate any feedback.

Love the name you have given this invention Sir Digby lol.
A pot riser/ runoff tray type thing.

I call the thing I built a runoff catcher lol. Its just a frame with growbag trays screwed on. With basins underneath that I slide out every three days n empty. Something more flat like this. And snug on tent floor looks a better idea though. As I struggle to get fans in good positions.

    Thank ya, Rasta.
The tray/basin combo sounds cool, man. I dig simplicity when it comes to design.
Did a bit of skimming through grow diaries to get ideas. Sacrificing as little height as possible is pretty much my main goal.
With the new columns in place the pots will now sit at about 2-1/4" (~6cm).
I think I've officially renamed this thing "Low Rider."

Still not sure how practical it is, though; haven't grown anything yet.
With this taking up the whole floor space of the tent, it might be tricky stepping around inside. Not sure how often that'll be necessary.

Yeah I cant really get in my tent at all lol. N my pots are raised about a foot off the ground. Gonna rethink my runoff catcher. I need to build a new one anyway. The wood a used was shit. So might try think of something better than what I got the now.

    Good to hear!

Good luck with the project, man. Just don't let it lead to neglecting any washing machine maintenance duties.
