    Default Heated propagator issues?

For a while now I've been cloning and using an aeroponic propergator but recently after a silly mistake I've killed all my plants including my mother I'm having to go back to seeds.

A while back i remember using a standard heated propergator that I've had for a few years now taking clones and using them peatplugs and to be honest i was only seeing 50% success rate which led me to go with the aeroponic propergator in the first place.

Now going with seeds again I've pulled out the heated propergator and some peatplugs again thinking well I'll give it another shot as I'm not doing clones this time i should be fine.

Switched it on put my low wattage t5 over the lid and dropped my inkbird monitor in there to check temps (something I've never had when using this propagator before) and low and behold I'm seeing temps of 36c this is with the room temp of 22c......

Is this propagator broken? Surely 36c is too hot??? This is probably the reason my clones didn't like being in there!

What is peoples ideal temps for there propagator?

Looks like another inkbird thermostat is on the menu

I've never used a propagator. I just chuck my seeds in damp paper towels, in a tupperwear type container & leave them on the kitchen bench, regardless of the temperatures....

Do you mean to pop the seeds in it as M_C is saying?

I've always cracked them in paper towels then put them in peatplugs into a propagator for what i thought would have been the correct temp and humidity to get them in there way quicker

Hey if i don't need the propagator I'm gonna roll with that?

I have a massive propagator that I really enjoy using..but to be honest, it's not actually needed, to put it simply it's a luxury item I like using..it has temp settings, but I shoot for around 22-26c because it's easier to dry any roots that might pop out at higher temperatures.

I've recently germinated lots of vegetable seeds for the garden in my propagator and it's handy.. but not essential by any stretch of the imagination.

Keeping it simple is sometimes best.

Hahaha, well scooby they say it's not the size that counts, but the motion of the ocean

Glad it made you chuckle, and the way you described it actually created a detailed image in my head of the 'scene' lol.

I have found that the heat from my T5 works great. Have the light about 12 inches above the cups, plugs or
whatever and it stays between 78f - 80f. Best of luck how ever you go.

I’ve never used paper towel method. It scares me

Drop them in a root riot cube (or similar), spray propagator lid with distilled water and leave them.

I’ve used heat mats in winter but not summer.

Instead of an Inkbird, a 300w light dimmer will do the job as the temps aren't that critical, 20'C to 26'C will work fine. If the room temps change with the seasons, only needs a small tweak to the dimmer to get back to what it was.
