    Default Excessive runoff

Finally got a decent 10L measuring jug through the door today so was great to finally use instead of the small 1L I’ve been having to use (talk about labour intensive) and throwing all into a bucket. Meant for ad-blue but the nozzle so the it is ideal.

I watered 6l yesterday, and coco was still very moist today, so watered 3L today but I got 2.1L run off. I’m wondering if I should just water and feed every 2nd day until I can get way under the 70% run off, give it a bit more time to dry out? What do you guys think?

With coco I water to get about 10-20% run off every water EVERY day. You want to feed every day to avoid any sort of build up mate if your unsure, try watering 1ltr and wait a few mins, and if no run off add another 1ltr and so on until you get some run off. At least then you’ll know how much to water, and so that your not wasting any

Feed/water everyday but reduce the amount so you get a little less run off. Try 1.5L & see how that works out

You never want to let coco dry out. Coco has very good moisture & air retention & the roots need both. If the roots dry out it'll be a very stressful event for the plant. As coco dries the EC rises (nutrient salts don't evaporate) so drying out could also cause "nute burn" symptoms (dark leaves, burnt tips).

You want to water coco at least once a day with run off each time (20-30%). The run off helps remove excess salts from the coco / roots, pushes the old nutrient solution out (which will have risen in EC) & also draws fresh air into the pot (roots).

In theory watering coco several times a day would keep the EC more stable & provide a better environment for the roots / plant. I've only ever watered once a day (& I think most do) but it's something I'll experiment with as the theory makes sense.

Do you not have a nutrient reservoir? Mixing up nutes every day must be a drag.

My nute res is a 60L kitchen waste bin and is kept as close to the grow as is practical. For feeding, I dip a 1L jug into the nutes and then pour it onto the plant. When the plant gets bigger and there's not enough runoff, the plants get 2 or 3 jugs of nutes.

When the nute level in the res gets low, after feeding I mix up another 20 litres of feed in a wine fermenter and pour it into the nute res.

I am assuming you aerate the reservoir, how often do you have to adjust the pH of the nutes in it?

Nice system, I always mixed mine daily & still am, although I am manually watering twice a day (I mix enough for both). I am planning on building an automatic watering system for mine, using a timer to timer for a pump to automate multiple watering's per day.

No aeration, no checking of pH or ec. With the current 1 seed plant and 1 clone grow, a 20L mix lasts about 4 days with once a day feeding. With the next grow, the Pepsi Challenge, 20L is going to last close to 3 weeks. Although I may halve that by feeding twice a day.

I have thought about automatic feeding in the past but decided against it. Daily feeding only takes a few minutes and mixing up 20L of nutes takes me about 5 minutes with no worries about pump failure or flooding.

I was getting 40% run off (from 5 litres) then eventually got it down to 20% by skipping day, watering / feeding every 2 days. I was using the humidity level to dictate the watering as the humidity was high even with regular heat, and air flow. Only now the excess today was 50% run off and a high EC of 28. The EC of the feed is anywhere between 17 - 20. I’m wondering if I just have a bucket ready like suggested and aim for a lower run off percentage.

I just trimmed some of the leafs that were blocking some of the buds. Not too much, but enough to hopefully improve the air flow and see how that goes.

The problem with this coco grow, the inexperience of the medium made me treat this like soil, and have used a large 30L pot, but have to kind of plod along now. I have a 15L for the next, which will allow quicker dry out times

You're right enough with your theory in practice, multiple feeds daily does keep the EC from rising more than 2/3 points.
