Default What I've discovered about fans & controllers...

As some of you know, I've been revisiting my ventilation the last few weeks.

The toys I have been playing with are :-

    RVK 6" L1
    RVK 5" L1
    RVK 5" A1
    RVK 4" A1

The two L1's are new 'toys', the A1's are existing ventilation.

Now, with the A1's, any fan controller worked well... if the fan dropped much below 50% there was a discernible hum... but nothing that would disturb you

The L1's - they hum like the Welsh mens choir tuning up on any of my existing controllers. They even hummed at 100%!

I got a Hydor from Ebay, cheap as chips (and with good reviews here) at about 70- 100% fine, but, below that hum... not as bad as my A1 controllers... but there...

So, I suppose I'm saying is this...

If the RVK has a large capacitor slapped to the side of it then a fan controller is a lot more expensive than the other sort!

My 6" L1 really hummed using ecotechnics controller, since switching to a hybrid controller no hum even down to 20%.

    I loved that ecotechnics controller...

Hi M_C, what controller would you recommend for my 10” gekko box extraction? I’m putting everything together over the weekend and I highly doubt il need it running at 100%

I've used one of these on a 6" L1 and not much hum: ebay 334031476207

The once and for all solution is a multi-tapped transformer from the grow shop. No electronics = no hum.

If you want it temperature controlled, then a thermostat with 3 connections can easily be wired to do that.

I use the variacs on 6" (A1) and 4" (L1), never had any vibration or even a peep from the controller on low or high, £80 a pop but no complaints. Been using over a year now I think

Hmmm... This shouldn't be that hard but I can't find what RVK stands for online. And what's the difference between L and A?

Now that you've posted this, I realize I know nothing about fans or controllers.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

I'm actively looking for an extraction solution that makes more sense.

    Cheers,
    B

No real idea, that is much bigger than I have played with

Hybrid controllers are the business but fairly expensive to buy, however a variac and a dual temp relay is cheap reliable way to make your own for a fraction of the cost and its variable, if your handy with DIY it's a breeze, I managed with zero electrical experience other than typical grow room stuff.

My one was borne out of noise control and I've since learnt running it constantly and slowly during the warm weather maintains a set temperature better over the day, there's no temperature/humidity spikes.

Variac + daul or double relay £70+ some odds and ends, you can't even buy a crap controller for that lol

Ecotechnics evolution 12 amp version if you don't mind spending the coin, you can wire heaters into it too fully automated...Most of these fan speed controllers are nonlinear stepping transformers. I prefer to use a variac for proper linear voltage without any humming...It's worth noting also regarding the alleged % folks are stating they run the fans at...The percentage should be measured in volts not what the dial on the device says they are almost alway inaccurate...Variacs dials indicate volts. I wouldn't go much below 120v on a 240v supply or 50% on any fan..Remember the fan has to be able to start up at the lower limit voltage whilst overcoming the static air pleasure and resistance in whatever length of ducting your usung..

Here's one I built in 2013 my mates using this now still going strong...You can see the build here https://www.thctalk.com/cannabis-for...eed-Controller
