    Default essential ph pens

hi guys so I have 2 essential ph pens and both give different readings in plain water so I've calibrated both with ph 7.0 and when doing a test again both still give different readings now I don't want to trust them so I've ordered a brand new one so I can compare.
maybe this is why my last run in hydroponics foooked up because one of the pens was broken

Never grown hydro but if you were using the wrong pen then it makes sense. Do you know which pen it was you used for that grow?

yes mate it was one I bought of the bay second hand that's probably why the guy sold it. so plan is to compare all 3 when brand new one comes but knowing my luck it'll be 3 different readings lol

Why would you buy second hand? Genuine question.

But fwiw leftover salts can build up on the electrodes and put numbers put of whack as well. Mine is fooled cause I dropped it in tank xD

no idea pal it's the first one I did buy second hand but never again. I think this probably contributed to my failed attempt in the shed

If you're getting a new meter anyway, why not go all out and go bluelabs?

Unless you spend real money, pH pens are mostly shite. Luckily for us, the acceptable pH range for growing is quite wide. I find the pH test drops accurate enough.

idk what the shelf life is for pH test drops is. Mine are well over 10 years old so I went to buy some more and saw that they're now more expensive than cheapo pH meters. So I bought a cheapo pH meter. It's crap. My tap water is a stable pH 7.0, I calibrate the pen to it and it gives a different reading 10 minutes later.

The only way I could get an almost trustworthy reading for my nutes was to calibrate the meter to my tap water twice and then immediately test the nutes. Repeat 3 times.Tap water = pH 7.0, nutes = pH 5.8 twice and pH 5.9 once.

I'll have to bite the bullet and buy some pH test drops.

I came across some pH test paper strips for urine and saliva so I ordered some. Range is pH 4.5 to pH 9.0 in 0.25 intervals. 2 different coloured testers on each strip which will make it easier to read accurately. I hope.

No point me getting an expensive meter. I only need pH measurements when first using a different brand of nutes. Once I know what the initial pH is and how much pH adjuster to add to 20L, I'm done with measuring pH.

Same, but people who have bluelabs swear by them and never known anyone to complain it was out.
Though there's another brand out there too can't recall the name. Fairly new one.

Essentials is good (first hand) but like I said salt build up can fuck it make sure you clean right after use.
