    Hi all,

I’ve been always used hid lighting as it’s all I really know, what lights do give the best performance now?
do led really yield and perform as well as hps?
What’s your experience with moving from hps to other types of light?

    Your help will much appreciated

Current LED's definitely have the ability to out grow HID (watt for watt) but there are drawbacks too for us older growers... such as heat becomes less of an issue... which messes with a well balanced ventilation system that was designed for the heat of HID

I'm getting sameish results from 300w led as 500w hps, I'd say 300w but I reckon I've only been using 250w,rh and lack of heat takes some getting use to

I was always a steadfast MH for veg and HPS for flower guy,I had researched LED's back about 2011/2012 but when doing my research they turned out to be crap,I looked into LED's again last year and my research wasn't giving me the info that I was looking for.I posted on this forum trying to get the info that I wanted and looked into some of the grow diaries on here and decided I would give LED a shot.
Switching from 600w HPS to 2x240w LED's has been interesting there is a learning curve for us old HPS lovers my 480w of LED outperforms my 600w HPS in yield, and way cheaper running costs,in veg I use one panel at 30%-40% power until I need the coverage of 2 panels which I run low as well until they they need more light,I run an AC infinity fan and 67 controller which uses about 8w at 50% power and still pulls in the walls of my 1.2mx1.2mt tent as soon as I zip it shut.
All in I prefer the LED panels to HPS,the electricity savings alone in lighting and ventilation costs make them worth it.

Having an environment controller should take out the hassle of dialling in your room? If its too cold the heater will kick in?

Just means you may need a bigger heater to pick up the slack but cooling should be more than capable.

My HLG scorpion r-spec is exactly like the 1000w hps in coolhood it replaced for heat, give or take a degree.

Will i get the same results from the scorpion compared to the 1000w hps????

Thanks for starting this thread funkydawg
I have been growing in dirt, perpetual for the last 20 years, for the last 10 years, prunning, topping and lst my plants ,keeping them short, bushy and level, understanding how to get the best out of the 600w hps, even wrap the canopy around the light if my plants grow too tall, alway used high airflow to keep the canopy cool but this also reduces stretch and increased the canopy airflow.
Things sound very different with leds, I want to move over to them but if feels like I need to learn how to grow again.

Does anyone else feel like this?

I’ve ran both mate mate, HPS and LED….safe to say I won’t be buying any HPS bulbs ever again in my life, take the plunge go get your self a nice panel and crack on

I've yet to fit my leds, I'm moving at a snails pace these days.

I'm not bothered about the lack of heat with led. I'm well used to growing in the cold. No, they don't stop growing when temps are less than 15'C. They'll probably stop growing at 0'C but my cellar has never been that cold. Besides, my growing will now be done in my living space, hall cupboard. The central heating will stop temps from getting too low.

If starting out with a tight budget, then imo hps is best. We never know what we really need to buy until shit happens and having cash in reserve can be a crop saver. Once dealer free, those savings can go towards getting the best light currently available.
