    Default Pissed off neighbor

HI, I recently got a RDWC system. I have a tent and the rdwc system placed in my room on the second floor. I installed the air pump for the oxygen and it is kinda loud. I hung it up above the floor but its still a little noisy. My question is do i have to run the air pump 24/7. My neighbor downstairs has been bitching about me making noise when i am literally jus walking around my house. Im trying to be considerate and maybe only run it during the day. Would this hurt my plants?? I also wrapped a towel around air pump to also to try and keep the noise down. I looked online for more quiter air pump but cannot find any. Do I have to run this pump 24/7 or can I just keep it on when the lights are on and turn off when the plants are asleep. She hasn't complained yet but knowing her I dont deal with her. Thank you.

Whilst not really up on RDWC, it is my impression that the air pump must always be operating.

Would having the air pump sat on a thick foam mat help deaden the noise?

I dont think so. I already have the pump suspended in the air. And now with the air stones in the buckets as well its pretty noisy. I dont know what to do. I think even with a quieter air pump the air stones themselves are pretty noisy

Not generally a good idea! The way these work is usually a transformer and an electromagnet, the magnet opens and closes the pump valve creating the mechanical noise you hear. Nature of the beast I'm afraid.
The transformer will get hot as none of the air that gets pumped out contacts the transformer for cooling internally. A towel really wont do it any good and is a massive fire hazard imo

You could look at DIYing a shock mount for it like they use for microphones in studios to reduce some of the vibrations but you won't silence it completely

NO SELL, NO SMELL, NO TELL!!!

You should run the air pump 24/7, you COULD run it just during the day, but you will probably notice a detrimental effect on your plants happiness.
As for your neighbour, I think you should run the pump all night and see if you get a complaint.

Personally, I would run that pump and not care about the person downstairs, but I have had the same problem as you but in reverse, my downstairs neighbours were really noisy, but I played them at their game and won. Gave them 2 solid years of the kind of noise they gave me, they moved.

I would buy a sheet of chipboard and place everything on there.
Use vibration Pads for Washing Machine between the floor and the board.
    Good luck

I once killed an expensive airpump by wrapping a towel around it.

    What size airpump is it?

It's not just the mechanics of the pump that is noisy. Try putting foam under the buckets. You can make a silencer from a sealed plastic container. For a small airpump, like a 400L/hr aquarium airpump, the container that vit c tablets come in is a handy size. A straight airline connector in each end and if needed, a drop of glue to keep it airtight. With a large airpump, maybe a 1L soda bottle. The silencer will reduce the put/put/put noise.

If the pump is powerful enough, you can lose the airstones. I had airline T pieces duct taped to the bottom of the res. 1 under each plant. Big bubbles are ok if there are lots and lots of them.
