DREX, what safety precautions do you have in the event of a leak? Your downstairs neighbour would object to the contents of the res coming through her ceiling.

That's actually a very good question!

Whilst doing dwc for ten years or more the pumps themselves are noisy but nothing for the neighbors to complain about the real noise comes from the airstones themselves. If you can suspend your air stone two inches from the bottom of the bucket and not allow it to touch the bucket it self you'll have a quiet system that neighbors can't complain about but if the air stone touches the bottom or the side of the bucket everyone including your next door but two neighbors will hear it .
Your air stones only need to be active to provide enough oxygen for your plants.
This all depends on how good your air pump is and how deep the buckets are etc etc

I've actually run a dwc bucket with the air pump running for 15mins a day which was enough oxygen for bacteria to start breeding in my buckets.

suspending it like you have is the best way to reduce noise. make sure no parts (or parts that touch the pump) are touching anything else in the room and everything is suspended using bungee cords.
i think the thing that will get you the furthest is social engineering. get friendly with your neighbour, like REALLY friendly. make her cookies, ask her about her day, laugh with her, etc. also make sure you have a plan of what to say the noise is so you are prepared when the conversation comes up. for bonus points say the noise is something really important that you have tried everything in your power to silence, maybe a life support machine for your dying daughter or something, you get the idea.

    good luck

you could also look at flooming instead of air pump, my system can run without an air pump but i have one anyway

EDIT: if anyone ever asked about the noise who visited my house id tell them fish tank in that room.... which wouldnt be unusual in my case as i used to breed clown fish

While you're making the neighbor baked goods, you may want to consider some cannabutter to chill her the fook out!

    I kid of course.
