Default Answered: Topping question? All help well received!

To top or not to top? That's pretty much the extent of the question.

I'm using a CFL and have had pretty consistent temps from 25 - 27°C so I think that's the reason for some small stumpy ladies with close nodal development.

I think I see 4 nodes so should I top? They are also on day 16. Pics to follow with what I think is me counting correctly. Any help is very much appreciated.

That is to say, I'll cut off the first node's leaves and shoots, keep 2,3,4 and then cut off the 5th node. 6 main branches to train. Seems this is a fairly common structure.
Some folks top at 4. YMMV.

Yeah Barney is giving you solid info, when I top it's at node 4.
I have learned that there are some plants that push out more than enough branches and topping can lead to bushes so thick air and light struggle to penetrate it, like in my last grow I had to strains crossed with Strawberry Nuggets, if I had done some reading on it first I would have found that many people are against topping this strain due to the fact that it already grows many budsites naturally, instead I topped each one twice and ended up having to cut the center out of both of them to help prevent rot.
So my suggestion would be to read a few Diaries of people who have grown that breeders strain and base weyher or.not to top them off that.
    Good luck man.

Yeah I've read 3, 4 or 5 for topping. I've seen it done at the 4th and I think I'm there so that's why I'm enquiring. Good to know ur a 4th kinda guy. Cheers Deku.

As far as the diary swatchin, I've looked for the specific RQS amnesia and medical seeds sour diesel and I can't find anyone who has done exactly that strain from that supplier.

The reason for the topping strategy is I've read it makes plants more susceptible to LST. And well im planning a SCROG so thought one top each could maybe help the ladies along the way.

I dunno I'm just going wing it and if it goes pear shaped I will make a thread about whether the strains like it or not. I was more looking for some advise on whether Pete thought that looked like the 4th node or am I counting like a diddy.

Cheers for the wise words Deku

I always shoot for a fim on node 3 or 4, rarely 5 and never 2. Lately I haven't hit a good fim, for awhile I got them every time. I'd say a good fim ups production by about 20% over a top.

Yeah Jingo I looked into FIMing. Pretty cool tbh never realised leaving an extra wee nib of plant could make a difference and could save you topping twice for 4 main cola/branches. I think to reduce complexity with my first grow/SCROG/LST in general, I will just single top.

Excuse the very crude drawing but this was the plan roughly.
Thats basically an aerial view looking down on the pot/SCROG.
Will it go to plan? Probably not. But better to have a shit plan than no plan I'm thinking.

When you top, if you get as large a nub above the node as possible you'll have less stem splitting when you do training later.
