With a digital single lens reflex, that single lens can be changed. Gives you more options. You can do macro photography, tric porn. Whatever you buy, I'd recommend getting a tripod, gives a huge increase in image quality. Don't be cheap, Manfrotto is a respected brand, very user friendly.
A lot of it will be bud, but I wanna future proof. I'm not happy with the digital camera I have so it looks like the next step is dslr. I don't mind spending the money, I'll see how things are when the kids stuff is sorted, would be nice to have before christmas

The thing about DSLRs is you get a certain functionality out of the basic lens that often comes with the body. If you want to get in real close you need a macro lens, you'll just have to buy a second lens if that's what you want. If you want to be able to zoom in on something from a long ways away then you need a telephoto lens.

The thing about lenses is they don't have to be the same brand as your camera it's okay to mix and match. You just have to do your research to know whether the lens is your binary any good or not.

Then of course if you're doing macro photography you're going to want a tripod and so many of the tripods in these days are just flimsy as crap. So I would say 15- 25% of your cost is probably going to be a quality tripod.

Maybe it would be a good idea to buy a 2nd hand one off the bay after all. There's gotta be plenty of ppl who just upgrade and sell on without being shadey bastards, right?

Did you buy lenses afterwards or did it come as a set?

It came with the lens it was purchased with & I bought a telephoto lens, a close up lens... and some lens tubes (which are supposed to be a cheap way to do macro) but never got around to using them

This is a pic I took with the 'standard' lens the first day I got the cam with everything set on auto...

This little Panasonic lumix TZ40 is my most used camera, easy to carry round takes cracking pics max out @ 18mp What's really nice though is that i can take pics in 16:9 aspect ratio which the Nikon DSLR doesn't...Think it was around £100 quid new a few years back...

Nice, it helps if you understand what the lingo means, like with growin weed, just got to jump in and learn. The digital one I have can take nice pics, but more for a mum on a day out to a farm park or somethin

I think I read my phone cam is 12 mp, so with this one being 16 is it an ok entry point or would you suggest higher as they go up to at least 30mp from what I've seen. It's on ebay 165216621355 Not lookin to buy right now

Macro shots are a different ball game to normal/standard photography mukka...Do your research before committing to buy...I've seen some outstanding close ups from phone cameras...With so called professional cameras you need the right setup to get it bang on, lense, light, tripods etc..Many professional photographers will take hundreds of shots of one subject then only use one..
