Ah, not good.... this is a way of forcing upgrades by making the app obsolete for your hardware

Sure...it's possible. You'll be the first to know if I run into that predicament.
Most companies are pretty good with providing updates to their software for free...at least that's been my experience. I've been updating portable devices for years from the manufacturer's websites. Besides, by the time my microscope dies the software will probably be outdated.

Mine is a few year old now, there are a few different incarnations of it... with different drivers (they are different too - I had to check them all)

Updates to software & drivers, you are correct - Apps is a whole different market I was forced to upgrade my phone, some time back, as the apps I required, stopped supporting the phone I had

The age of privacy is dead. You vill download zee app, you vill eat zee bugs. Planned obsolescence is part of the "plan". No neo-luddites allowed at this party. (Complete sarcasm from the dark side, take lightly, but deep inferrence)

Just joshing.. all good. Resume to regular programming.

Not that I understand smart phones but... if a software update means needing a new phone, couldn't a cheapo old phone be used to run an old camera app? Treat the old phone as if it's a remote control for the camera and not use it for anything else.
