If running Android, you can sometimes seek out older versions of the app that is still supported under current running "obsolete" OS of said "old phone". They might not be available via the official app store route, but searching "app name .apk", will turn up links from repositories that will sometimes carry older app versions that may be compatable. This is assuming the end device supports communicating via WiFi/BT to a mobile device..

If running Apple, you're kinda screwed in this regard because last I checked they don't allow for 3rd party app downloads.

Could be screwed either way, but good to check avenues before driving the nails in the coffin..

i thought about buying one of these but i assumed it would be one of those products that forced us to install invasive software on our phones to harvest our data. i couldn't find answers so saved my money but i would still love one.
what permissions does the accompanying app use?

I believe the USB ones will run on mobile phones... although you may need a driver?

Being a bit of a Luddite, I have a strange relationship with technology. For me, hardware beats software every time because I understand hardware more.

I have an old Kodak EasyShare camera. 5.0 mp and good enough for internet pics. It started to eat batteries. I managed to find a cheapo mains power supply. Then it stopped focussing. As I already had a power supply, I got another Kodak camera, same model. That one stopped uploading pics to my pc.

I am now in the ridiculous position of using one camera to take pics and another to transfer those pics to my pc. Swapping an SD card every time.

Nothing wrong with being a luddite. I am a luddite metaphorically stuck in a high tech professsion, maybe half-autiso (seriously). I utilize tech, but pretty well understand that end user license agreements are never read, thus why people don't understand the simple notion of "If a product is free, then you are the product". I understand the infinite progress idea, "good of the world and all..", but don't fully agreee with it and certainly don't think that it's sustainable. We have lost or way in a many degree..

    Domo
    thank you.
that is exactly what i am worried about. in what world does a camera need to know your precise location???
it is obvious data harvesting. i'm not sure if it's worse that it's a chinese manufactured product or not, given the rumours about the chinese and their data harvesting, but personally i don't care who is trying to steal my information, they can't have it.

    thanks for the heads up

couldn't agree more. that is a very important quote: "If a product is free, then you are the product". however these days they have stepped the game up and even paid products are using people for data harvesting.
it is so difficult just to shop for something these days
