i am lucky, i can grow things like basil in my window sill. i have had mine for about 3-4 years on only natural light through the window all year round. i have taken a bunch of cuttings from it, rooted them in water and grown them out in the same window with 100% success with no special treatment or equipment.

    what is your USDA zone?

I had planned to flip them to 12/12 last week, but decided to wait until they adjust to the MH. They are still on 24/0. I’ll probably keep them on that for now until I move them back to the LED. They are 10”-11” tall now and were ready at 8” to sample. Now that I have an idea how they grow my next step is to do some tip pruning and decide on a feed schedule.

Haven’t decided yet where or what they will end-up be it inside/outside or annual/perennial. Still a project so probably a little of both.

Okay, very good. Seems they can take a fair amount of light without complaint as I have the seedlings under 24h also. Ha! And I realized, from your sharing of course, that thinning out was immediately necessary! So thanks for being the guiding light here. These already smell outstanding! Forgive my complete ignorance.. why are you switching them to "flower"? Seems that they are making the fragrant leaves that we want on 24/7.

    Again thanks for sharing

    Cheers

I don't need them to grow anymore right now. 12/12 is just to slow down their growth rate and save a few pennies. Apparently they can take 24/0 but can survive with 6/18. My guess is they can handle 24/7 with the right lighting.

When I see flowers forming I will just pinch them off.

That's why I started them indoors. I still have snow on the ground.

I had moved a few plants outside and they started to flower. I snipped all the flowers off 4 days ago but apparently didn't snip low enough on one. Nature fighting to survive I guess.

i had a big fight with all my basil this year. every time i chopped them they would bolt again within a week or two, so i ended up taking some tiny cuttings before the branch had a chance and growing them out to a new plant.
i seeded the mother (they are self pollinating and self fertile, so very easy) and now i have a bunch of seeds too.
i am only now realizing, while typing this, that the basil won the fight
