Depending on strains mate fast buds start flowering usually within 21 days so you gotta top um early

I never topped the old auto's from a decade ago as they were a different league to modern day auto's,now I usually top auto's just above the 3rd node.
In this pic,the plant at the front is untouched in any way,the other 2 have been topped above 3rd node, you can see the variance between the 2 topped plants alone as well as the difference from not being topped.

This one I am really glad that I topped going by the size of her,and yes these are all auto's.

This is the even canopy on that plant.

As you can see auto's like photo's can react differently to topping,I treated both my topped auto's the same, same age, same topping, same training, same feed, just different strains.

I bet you get an extra 35 % yield just from topping them 2 mate compared to the other.

I topped a FastBuds at day 33. Plant is fine. I've topped my last couple of autos at node 8 around day 21. They look fine. I used to always top at node 5 on about or before day 17. Rigidly, I followed that rule. Then one day I didn't. And the same thing happened...the plant kept growing and made flowers. So like was saying earlier, you can be in one camp or the other camp... and both be correct.

You can top an auto after it's started flowering.

    Cheers

It sounds like you are topping them just as they start to flower... the previous node would, most likely, be a better option for you

Topping twice is a very real possibility... but not for the feint hearted - BB & I played, a couple of year back, on topping autos, using a technique not mentioned elsewehere.... that lends itself to a 2nd top (No, I won't be saying any more about it LOL)

Auto's are for sure way more hardy than most people think, although there are some that don't take the topping well,I had a Purple Juice auto that did not like being topped it held her back 2 weeks that may just have been that pheno(I'll try it again).

Maybe something I will try in a future grow Barney .I just always followed the rule of topping early with autos to get the stressing of the plant out the way b4 first show.cheers
