Default Tip for watering, plus, are tomato grobags ok to use?

Hi everyone, I've tried various growing techniques but, after four or five years I have settled on 15l fabric pots, with good results. For my latest grow, I embedded a couple of pierced plastic pipes in the pots to help ensure that water gets to the lowest roots. I can water on top and directly into them. Fingers crossed, it seems to be working well - a lot less leaf drop. Worth others trying?

Also, looking forward to summer, I generally plant directly in soil - having fertilised the area in advance - or in large pots. Would it be ok to use the supermarket tomata grobags? Are they too rich?

Happy growing everyone and advice welcomed!

I’ve found the soil in tomato grow bags too hot for cannabis. I like to use John Inns 1,2 and 3. 1 for seedlings, 2 for Veg and 3 for flower. No nutes, just keep potting up. If they’re going in the ground I’d suggest getting them to a decent size in pots, harden them off in a green house if you have one, or just make sure they’re protected from frost at night until around the end of May. Make a hole twice the size of the pot, line with general purpose compost or John Innes no 2 and stick them in.

With regard to the watering, I thought watering from the top was recommended because, as the water works it’s way down through the soil it pushes out the old air in the root ball and draws new fresh air in. But if your system is working for you, stick with it.

Holy crap now this takes me back!..on THCtalk over 10 years ago, most growers used John Inns 1#, #2 and 3# , they were the 'go to' soil that we all recommended, it was great soil..glad to see some still use it

Ha ha, yes back when everyone was growing Martian Mean Green, Lemon Stinky and Black Rose. Yep still using John Innes, 1,2 and 3 still only £12 for 3 x 25ltr bags and still works….

20 years ago, new growers were told: 'Don't use Miracle-Gro, it's too hot.'

It's popular now so they must have changed it.

Wasn’t aware Miracle Gro was a thing now, but then I haven’t been around grow forums for about a decade. I remember Miracle Gro compost had slow release ferts in it so difficult to flush out at the end of flower.
The other thing I’ve noticed is the amount of growers using LED now, back then they were only just hitting the market, well in the UK they were. But they’ve come on massively, some of the LED grows on here are astonishing.

Yes, MG has made some big changes, they have two different Organic Soils now. One is very good, but can't say too much for the other one.

If you go that rout you want the one with the words In Ground Soil, writing on it. The other has release nuts, and shouldn't have the word Organic on in as far as I can tell. But this stuff is great mix with some Black Kow, or just any other time soil you like.

That’s interesting, thanks. Do you know if there are any grow diary’s using it I can look at?
