Default Energy price rises in the uk

Not sure if this is the relevant thread for this post but I'm going to stick it here anyway.

In the uk we are due a 54% elec and gas rises in April so I'm sticking this out there to see if there is any cost effective ways to get round this.

I suppose led would be a good start but how much less elec does a led use to a hps. Does anyone know.

Also does anyone else have any tips for doing shiz in the single block shed in uk

    Haha

IMHO, LED is limited due to cool running temps, meaning heating is often needed.... no saving

Using led like myself in the winter you will end up using more heating to compensate the less heat produced by the light to keep your environment temps bang on.

Good insulation is key to save money with heat loss especially in an out building

You could always use hps in winter and led in warmer months?

With two inches of foam insulation and LEDs I cut my groom electricity usage in half. That's a reasonable goal, especially if you insulate to the point where you don't need heat anymore. That was one of the reasons I like switching over to autos, keeping my lights on 24/7 and using only my extraction to control air temps worked great.

My main groom is made from 4 square upvc frames with top and bottom then 28mm pvc foam and ply panels.its in the shed and just with a small bar heater I can go lights out in the winter in the night, keeps a steady 19° lights off.
Bar heater is around 25 watts so dont take much spark. Click image for larger version.

Obviously good insulation is the first step.

Everyone wants to grow in an ideal climate but achieving that is not always cost effective. What to do depends on how much grow space is available in relation to how much bud is needed to be dealer free. If short on space, then yield per square foot is the priority and the climate needs to be good to stand a chance of being self sufficient. If plenty of space, then the priority is yield per quid spent. It can be cheaper to double up on the space/lighting and let them be cold.

Up to the sensible limit of 10, more plants = less growing time. Training 1 plant to fill a space takes time and those extra weeks cost money. Cost of extra grow time vs cost of extra seeds.

So stick to hps because a oil heater will cost more with a led then I take it.

Looks like the next thing is to insulate the outbuilding and hoping that will help.

If you insulate well you can run a led and Low power heater no problem.

I think I’m going to invest in a larger green house and just knock growing indoors on the head during the summer.
The last couple of years I’ve had pretty good success with autos, started off under CFL around end of April, after a couple of weeks they go in the green house during the day, then back under CFL during the night. It is a bit of a ball ache bringing them in and out but that only lasts a couple of weeks. After that they just stay in the greenhouse to flower during our longest and warmest days. Last year I had a small plastic green house, just big enough for two plants. I had two Gorilla Glue (freebies from Herbys) They done surprisingly well for outdoors in the UK, buds not quite as dense as grown indoors, but smoked well, and also got a fuck load of trim and air buds for hash, butter, etc. They were in John Innes 2 and I just kept potting them up, last pot up around 2nd week of flower. No nutes at all, just rain water from the water butt. This year got my eye on a small poly tunnel… about £100.

    54% price rise,holy shit.
Is this because of that cheap, clean, renewable energy?
