    Default LST a Tree...

Yep. You can train just about anything that grows. Here’s an ongoing grow-project I’ve been training for about 6 years now. I took a seedling from this Red Cedar Tree

and did LST for the first two years indoors. It was topped and trained to develop a split-trunk forming two main branches which now form one canopy. I usually prune it twice a year. Here’s what it looks like today.

Although called an Eastern Red Cedar or Red Cedar in general, it’s not a true Cedar at all of the ( Cedrus ) genus. Its actually a juniper…Juniperus virginiana.

That's impressive growth for 6 years!

You have a drawing of how you want this tree to look finished?

    Cheers

That's as tall as I plan to let it get. My vision is to keep it small as a bonsai which will eventually end-up back indoors. Growth rate attributed to 2 years under a 150 watt growlight at 24/0 with heavy feeding for the next 3 years...that's something seedling never get growing in the wild. It's growth rate had stopped dramatically last year since I no longer feed it nutrients and it's kept outdoors year-round.

Really cool project mpsj. I would love to make a small wind break from some trained ones.

When I was young we used to mischievously create "art pieces" with what we called "Calling Cards" in the wild woods. We'd pick an isolated spot in the woods, find a tree growth 2 -3 feet tall, and do some LST to it. Could be as simple as pinning the top to the ground or twisting two together like a rope. After a few years it will develop into this "out-of-place" looking growth. I revisited one of my Calling Cards a few years ago and in 25 years it was certainly much BIGGER and an eye-catcher in appearance to say the least. At least when I'm gone I'll be remembered and remain alive-n-well in the woods.
