Default Unanswered: Solar Panels - LED Grow

    Hi Folks,

I am currently researching some stuff with a view to upgrading in the future, and have a few questions for anyone who has any experience of using solar panels and an LED lamp in the UK.

I am looking at getting a Spider Farmer SE7000 730W LED for a 1.5m x 1.5m x 2.2m grow tent, I generally grow in the winter months and just do a couple of grows a year.

I am looking at powering this lamp via Solar panels, with the power stored into a couple of AGM batteries, and my questions are as below:

    1. I will generally be using the LED on 12/12, at 600w, what would you suggest I get in the way of solar panels to provide 12 hrs @600w in the winter in the UK?.

    2. How many Amp hours of batteries would you suggest to provide the power?.

I know the above is a big ask, but any links to info or diaries, or any information would be greatly appreciated

No worries fella, I am not sure I will get an answer, but if not what I will probably do is get a solar amp metre out in the garden between August and May, which is the months I grow, and work out over those months what the lowest amps the panels harvest, and then I can work out how may panels I need.

With the way the energy market is going I am thinking solar could be a good way to offset growing costs

    Yes fella, still down south

I suppose when it comes to solar you even have to take that into account, even in the UK you will probably get more sun light hours in winter in the south, than in the north.

Its all good this is a bit of a long term project, I have used solar in my garden, I have a 120w panel and 1 x 100amp hour agm battery, in my greenhouse, which powers my a water pump and irrigates my raised beds and strawberries in the summer.

With the hike in energy prises thou, I am looking at what ever I can to offset my carbon footprint and save money

Your power companies don't ever come by and ask if they can put Panels on your roof. Over here in the States, they are trying to get everyone to let them do that. I've have told them no several times in just the last year.

I love projects like this but this one sounds like a non starter.
You want to use a solar panel in the winter(could be 8 hours of sunlight) days on end could be overcasted, rain, snow etc and you would need the panel to pull over 1 kWh for 8 hours every day, I don't think a batteries can store large amounts of electric.

I believe that you can power the light for 2 hours on 1 full battery charge. I think it is doable with a 4 battery setup. Once you figure out how much sun you get you should be able to determine how much panel is needed to charge the batteries.

I had a similar idea but with a 30 or35 ft. Wind mill to assist in the winter.
