It depends on the type of soil grow.

If you have to add feed and it comes from a bottle then i balance the ph of the feed. If i don't i have problems.

If my plants look funny i check the soil ph with a slurry test. Adjusting the soil PH has saved my plants.

Expensive soil (bad batch) was a 4.0 out of the bag. I could not grow in it.

I do a slurry test before i plant my tomatoes outside and adjust the soil if needed before planting.

Once soil plants need feeding, the lucas formula works well. No need to adjust pH, get the correct GH Micro for your tap water.

In general soil will buffer itself, but if underwater, overwater or give the plants lots of food it can really mess the root system up causing the PH levels to be out.
Think of it like this, what's the PH level need to be for my tomatoes plants and carrots, any super carrot food?
don't really make sense when you think of it like this.
most veg growers add some garden lime and this helps to keep the ph in range.

Vegetables won't grow if the ph is way off

Carrots will taste better if grown in a PH range of 6-7. Out of range affects taste and growth rate.

    Morning CityDweller,

A few years I checked my tap water, just over 7 and the EC was 0.3(online it says UK tap water is between 6.5 and 9.5)
your compost could have a PH of 5 but if your tap water has a PH of 7, the soil's PH will balance it self out in no time, unlucky if its over 8, but the bottle nutes and dry food tends to reduce the ph level.
If my Tap water and Soil Ph was too high, I would add a 1TBSP of garden Lime into the soil mix(20ltr pot) as this will keep the PH in range for most plants.

Soil can correct pH (within reason), so it’s deemed as not necessary.

I don’t grow in soil but I’d pH, saves the soil from sorting it out & one less thing to consider when things go wrong.
