    Default LED vs HPS?

So it looks like led's have come a long way in the last decade or so and with the cost of electric these days have many of you converted over and would you say they are comparible?

I just wonder about things like the density of the buds and things like that

    Welcome to the site Welf,

Bud quality, crop size etc, imo there no difference.
From my experience, HPS need about 40% more power to get the same results and then you need to deal with the extra heat etc.
Led cost more up front but make things easier in the long run.
Hps are cheap to buy, over all LEDs are now the best choice.

Yeah, Unless you have a particularly cold grow space. HPS gives you added heat that you might need to supplement with LED, which will eat into the savings on electricity.

I wouldn't call it a total no brainer as there are some reasons to choose hps over led apart from the start up cost.

As already said, hps run hotter. Bad news during a heatwave and good news in a cold environment. I've done a lot of grows in a cold cellar with hps and got a consistent 0.8 gpw. I doubt I'd get close to that with led down there without using more leccy on heating than the led saves.

There is a bit of a learning curve to led, getting the amount of light correct is not a given. When starting out, the jars are empty. Every mistake lowers yield and delays the time it takes to become self sufficient. With hps, you can't give the plants too much light, they'll fry first. If the canopy temps are 25'C to 28'C, the hps is at the correct height.

A different story when the jars are full. Enough savings on dealer weed to buy a good led and a buffer stash to make up for any mistakes with led intensity.

I just got a led 465w .. been meaning to do it for several summers now, finally got around to it..

plan is relocate me 1.2m tent, grow some autos in there whilst vegging my new seeds peyote zkittlez.. have done the maths and leccy wise it will pay for itself in 3 years as lucky enough to still be on fixed rate for another 12 months then its going to be around 40p a unit for me which is more than double than what I am paying now, savings on the year left with my current tarrif will be a modest £132 and when my tarrif ends and the 40p a bubble shit comes in then my savings compared to staying with the 600w, draws 630 watts hps will be a nice tidy 305 nicker.. sooner give my money to a grow shop than those theiving fuckers in the leccy energy market taking the piss out of us something fucking rotten they are,, gits.. anyways,,, the savings alone will be welcome.. will I get get similar results to me 600w hps? will see.. will update this around August.. will be starting shit around middle of next month.. venting out the window no more holes in ceiling etc,, kushty. have even factored in no more buying lamps for 5 years go through 2 600w sunmasters superduperlumen shit and 2 metal halides a year,, then the fans get turned down as no need to have them at full pelt, so the savings I have stated are minimum savings,, few more bob to be had.. fingers crossed the fuckers are what they make out to be, if not then will just chalk it down to be being an utter twat.

    40p a unit?

My leccy has increased to 30p a unit including the 5% vat. That's not including the standing charge though.

Like farmer says hps for the winter and led for the summer. I got the lumatek zeus 600w pro 2.9 knowing my plants will bake in the summer as for bud density mine are solid with led but overall yield not sure as I'm drying at the minute but still can't give a propper number because I veged with hps then two weeks into flower used led. But from what I can say the buds are dens. Next run I'll just use led and see how it goes.

    Fair warning I'm a noob.

FWIW when I bought my setup recently I didn't even think about not going LED.

From the research I did before buying, modern, good quality LED's provide a better spectrum and are way more efficient. I can't speak about the heat issue (I have too much) but for every other scenario LED is the way to go. AFAIK all commercial grows are now done under LED (I've not seen any modern facility pictures that are not LED)

My first ever grow was just done under LED and even though I had a few hiccups (as it was my first grow) it yelded an ungodly amount of weed (picture in the novice section).

Could be my faulty stoner memory but each day when I turn the newly chopped buds on the drying racks, my hands feel stickier than when I was turning bud grown under hid.
