    Default Electrical Problem

    Hi Guys,

Non canna related but know we have a lot of clever people here who might be able to save me a few bucks/quid.

I wanted to replace a light in my bathroom today as it was old and not fit for purpose, so I turned off the power at the mains box, checked the terminals with my amp metre, and they were all dead, so proceeded to cut the live, neutral and ground wire. I then wrapped each wire in electrical tape, then bundled and taped the 3 wires together.

So here is my problem, when I turned the mains box back on, non of the lights in the upstairs now work

I wonder if any one had any idea's before I have to call in a sparky, I have checked the mains box, but none of the circuit breakers look like they have tripped or any thing.

    Any help is greatly appreciated

I am not an electrician, nor do I have any major amount of experience with electrical work.
That being said, your lights might all be on the same line, do you have any pictures of the wires?
and have you tried reconnecting the old fixture?

    Hey Deku,

Thanks for the reply, The wires are all taped now, but I am sure your right, the wires I cut would have been on the circuit breaker marked "Upstairs Lights" in my mains box, but I had turned off mains power to the building, by dropping the red switches on the left in my mains box, before cutting the wires, and I electrically tapped the end of each one, and then taped them together, before switching the power on.

Its a right pain in the arse as none of the light sockets upstairs are now working and me and the Mrs are trying to paint in the dark

I am know sparky by any means, but, it sounds like that broke the circuit. There is no continuous loop now. JMHO

Lighting circuits usually have just live and neutral (no earth).

It may be that your bathroom light was the first in line upstairs and the neutral was connected through it - so 2 of the wires you cut were neutrals and you broke the circuit to all the upstairs lights (the 3rd wire would be the live which would be connected through the light switch).
