Throw in some fresh lawn clippings and mulched hardwood leaves in the fall....Presto! I don't sow directly into the compost. I use it as a top layer that gets lightly mixed in to the top of the root zone soil.

I highly recommend going with a raised bed if you want to grow trees year after year..cheaply. I'm here if you want to bounce stuff off me. I don't know your soil or your weather patterns, but I'm sure we could figure it out. One benefit/downfall (depending on the individual) is it's a twelve month grow. I turn my compost once a week or more.

Man I enjoy that Grimm Glue

I'm enjoying my indoor, but I can't stopping thinking about the next outdoor.

    Do you add food waste?

All of it. I keep a small stainless canister by our kitchen sink that has a smell filter in the lid. Once it fills up I hike it out to my pile. I'm not worried about rodents getting into my pile, so I don't worry about seperating the meat out.

Do you throw it into its own pile or with the browns? Is there a ratio you yse when mixing piles?

I throw everything into one pile..food scraps, browns, greens, all of it. I try and turn the pile at least once a week. As far as ratios go I let the pile dictate that. When I notice things have started to slow down (lack of heat) thats when I add a hefty amount of rich greens to the pile. Grass clippings are perfect for getting things going again. You can use molasses or even soda, basically you need to keep the sweet toothed bacteria happy otherwise it goes from aerobic to anaerobic and it becomes a much longer process. The greens tend to break down much faster then the browns.

It can get as sciencey as you want, but in the end it's just a rotting pile of organic material. The plants love it, it's free, and it gives me a good excuse to sneak away from the wife and have a pinch of Cope. I always have two piles going...the first pile is last years, the second is the current years. I only add greens to the older pile if I notice it's slowed down. The old pile gets sifted using a bedding fork and spread after I harvest i the fall. Any big chunks get thrown into the other pile. I like to have it over winter on top of the soil, but a few times I couldn't get to it in time and had to add it in the spring. In that case I like it to be exposed to at least a couple heavy rain falls and a couple weeks of sun before I plant.
