    Default 2 Strains 1 res?

    Evening Stoners

I’m trying to decide what to do for my Autumn grow. I going to be using a 2 plant DWC in a 75lt res. Until now I’ve only ever grown the same strain in this set up and I’ve had pretty good results. This grow I want to do two different strains (Black Domina/ Exodus Cheese) (literally chalk and cheese in terms of plant structure, bud development, leaf shape, etc)

So I’m concerned that I’m not going to be able to give each plant what it needs. If the Black Domina turns out to be a hungry girl … which I’m pretty sure she will, and the Cheese doesn’t have the same appetite, how do I just my nutrient levels? Do I just work my way up to about 1.4 / 1.6 EC and leave it there? I’m not looking for huge yields just a little variety.
If anyone has any experience or thoughts they want to pass on, that would be very much appreciated.

    Vlad

Ran two strains on a single res earlier this year. I had to play a middling game for 4 plants. One would be pale and the other had burning tips. I'll never do it again.

That said, perhaps using MegaCrop would be the answer. They swear that the 'moron' strategy works for most deficiencies and it's vegan (organic-ish) so burning would be very difficult.

I didn't answer your question; sorry.

Ive done different strains in my system and things have been ok.

Just find a nice EC and go with that.
You would have to have some serious bad luck to have one needing a vastly different ec to the other I reckon.

I’ve had the odd pale plant from time to time even though the rest are fine and dandy, but I wouldn’t up the feed to compensate for that. They all finished at the same time and yielded the same. Some are just finicky buggers

Edit…don’t know If I’d go with chalk and cheese though, think I’d look for strains that grow similar.

Whatever the strain, the lucas formula always works.

Well, Vlad, this is actually something I have given quite a bit of thought to, not necessary with different strains though, but the principles are exactly the same.
Even plants of the same strain have different needs, one might need a shot of Cal/Mag pthers may need more or less Nutes, I have had this in Dirt, but with a common Res, there is a way forward that 'Should' work, and that's Foliar feeding, this will enable you to give individual plants exactly what they need and ones that don't need it, don't get it, hope this helps.
I remember one Dirt Grow, mixing Nutes up and halfway through watering, adding more Nutrients, i.e.Cal/Mag, on the last couple of plants, then I 'twigged', in my case foliar feeding would also work, but it needs to be dome just before Lights out, for the same reason, you don't wash a car in Sunshine.

Care to share your take on it? Even if it's just theory... most of us are working off theory when it comes right down to it.

Hi Barney, first off I’m changing my mind on the strains, as Bethmeg advised it’s probably not a great idea to choose two that are vastly different. I’ve still got some cheese seeds so I’m going to keep them for early next year. The Black Domina I only have the one plant and it’s a fast version so I’m very interested to see how it’ll do in a DWC set up. So I want to choose another Indica to go with it, I’m thinking maybe Durga Mata, or a Kush. But of course that does raise another issue, 1 plant grown from a cut taken from a mature plant and the other from seed, so chances are when I flip 12/12 the cut will go in to flower long before the plant grown from seed… same res, when do I change the nutes from grow to bloom?

So maybe I should just say sod it, take a cut off my Cheese (my Pepsi challenge entry) and a cut off my BD, root them now, veg them for a while and a couple of weeks before I want to start my DWC grow take fresh cuts off both plants and use them for the DWC grow.
I think your right and it’ll be a matter of playing a middling game to get the ec level at a happy medium for both, and as Techead has suggested, foliar feeding could be the answer to keep both happy and healthy. Or Farmer Gs suggestion of the Lucas Formula, but I’m not familiar with that so something I’d have to look in to.

Lol so at the start of this post I was adamant I’m changing the strains and by the end of it I’m definitely using the strains I already have… I need to ponder the pros and cons some more I think.

No need to worry about when to change from veg to bloom.

Running 3 strains on the same res (link in the signature), it’s a compromise.
