    Default Ducting advice

Evening all, I need to pick up some new ducting. I’ve been looking around online and there’s some acoustic ducting for sale, as I’m always trying to keep fan noise to a minimum I’ve been considering getting this but it’s about double the price of normal ducting so I wanted to ask if anyone has had any experience with this and if it’s actually worth the extra price or not

Also curious to see if anyone has any suggestions on quieter fans or any tips on keeping them as quiet as possible? I currently use a fan speed controller but even set to half, it’s still pretty loud so any info is appreciated

What type of fan do you have? I have heard good reviews on these silent fans when compared to a standard fan but never tried one myself. Click image for larger version.

For maximum noise reduction you can add a duct silencer combined with a silent fan. The silencer goes right after the fan. Click image for larger version.

I could write a book on soundproofing but the advice you've had so far is "sound" (I'll get my coat...)

Try and avoid bends and long runs. Bends and long runs increase noise and also reduce efficiency meaning you need to turn the fan up to compensate for the pressure loss leading to more noise.

Also as a rule of thumb, go for the largest fan/ducting you can afford/accommodate then go larger. Larger fans run quieter with the same CFM and larger ducting means lower flow for the same volume (again reducing noise).

If you don't care what it looks like you can emulate crude acoustic ducting by just wrapping ducting in flexible rockwool insulation. It's ugly and you have to be very careful to cover everything as well as not compacting it but you can do 10's m with just a single roll of it.

Those ACInfinity 6" fans are whisper quiet levels 1-4, audible 5&6, noticeable 7&8 and like a whiny hurricane at 9 and 10

Love mine though - just wish I'd got a 8 or 10" in the end.

That could be an option, I have the fan hanging inside the tent though and only have a 2x2 space to hang it so maybe I can find one small enough

Cheers mate, will take a look. Was going to ask a friend to make a box for the fan to keep the humming to a minimum but I’m paranoid it’ll overheat and catch fire lol
Will take a look at your link now thanks for the info

    I don’t think it’s a popular brand, but it says it’s a 8” FanFlow IFan-150 120w 550m3/h and 2580rpm

From what I can find online (mostly scam looking websites) it’s supposedly already pretty quiet using ballbearings?

I do have a cheapish 8” red scorpion but that sounds way louder almost like an rc plane is bombing it around and won’t work with the fan speed controller for some reason

thanks for the screenshot mate will definitely be considering these!

The dad jokes are 25% of the reason I’m here lol

My longest continuous run is about 2m and pretty straight to the nearest window for intake (which is partly why I’m worried about the noise) is that too Long?

I think realistically an 8” is the biggest I could really fit in the tent. It’s 2x2x6 and struggle a bit with space late flower when I have my lights up high

Will definitely look at the 8” AC infinity, it’s pretty pricey but from the amazon seller I looked at it comes with environmental control and an app to keep an eye on things so would definitely be worth the investment

Only need it to keep my temps a couple degrees lower with a little less noise, the invisible sun lights don’t kick off much heat but with warmer nights where I live I’m reaching 30 at night while the lights are running

Never thought so much could go into something as (supposedly) simple as fans and I definitely never thought I’d be learning about different types of ducting!

Based on what Bud Lightyear said about the ducting, I think a good quiet fan + quality ducting designed for sound reduction would combine well. As far as I can see you don't have space for a muffler so the ducting would be a worthy upgrade.

Definitely agree mate, I’m gutted about the space… I do have a bigger tent but for the next 7 months at least that’s not an option and I’m just making the most of the little space I have, it’s a shame

The best advice I can give is use a higher airflow fan than you need & then slow it... a fan at full speed is noisier than a fan at 1/2 speed
