Default Requesting a "Friends In Need" area for the Off Topic area

    Hey Mods and Admins,

Please could we have an area for people who might want to express or vent their more immediate life issues, or things of a more personal nature? May be just for the Tangoed-and-more-only, but just a thought. A lot is going on in the world, and as a Four Twenty community, I think a specific area might be useful for the like minded. Just a thought. Thanks.

Hey Val, I get where you're coming from here, and a lovely thought/suggestion from you

We do want members to feel comfortable to express or vent their immediate life/personal issues, and members should feel free to do so in either the existing 'off topic' section, or higher up if they wish only to share it with a 'limited' number of members..we have a great community here who I have no doubt will treat these types of topic with maturity and sensitivity.

My only worry about having a 'very specific area', like you have suggested would be that we might have a group of people who may not have a good understanding on how to deal with very serious/sensitive topics that might come up more often, and as well intentioned as we all may be, could actually end up offering advice that would be detrimental to the person asking for help.

We have had a few occasions where we have had to step in to really say that the forum isn't the best place to deal with a particular topic, and perhaps best to speak to a professional (depending on the severity).

It's a fine balance we need to try and keep, and the last thing we want is to create an area that contributes to bad advice (albeit well-intentioned), for people who really need some professional help that many of us are not equipped to give.

Having said that, perhaps when those very serious/difficult topics do arise, we could still offer that advice of perhaps seeking more 'professional help', but we would all need to be in sync with this and it can't be guaranteed bad advice won't be given.

I'd love to hear more opinions on this from the members, and a topic of this importance definitely deserves some 'serious' thought...

Please do share with us your thoughts and opinions on this and we will certainly have a chat upstairs about this.

Thanks, Ice. Yes, I see what you mean about bad advice, and I am 100% with you. It would be worse if someone in urgent need wasted precious time here and received bad advice!!

The medical section does cover a big chunk of what have in mind. I understand that when it comes to health issues, the Medical area is what that's for, and we already have rant threads and whoop-whoop, and boo threads. I just think that an umbrella area, or a non-medical-but-personal-turmoil-space could work to consolidate some of those threads, or to allow a new topic its own space. Car issues, housing, the usual stresses in life like children, school, partners, mother-in-laws, etc.

What are people's thoughts on that?

For my two pennies worth, I think this forum is one of the most friendly and down to earth places I've been to on the Internet in a long time. I had a difficult time recently and it helped just coming on here and talking about growing cuz of the nice vibes.

So it would be nice to have somewhere to post something a bit 'heavier' without worrying it would be unwelcome amongst more light hearted topics. I do think it should be ring fenced for members with a posting history like the diaries and I accept all of Ice's concerns as valid and worthy of consideration first too.

My fear is that folks will turn it in to politics.

With all that is going on in the world it is bound to happen and it never ends well.

Sticky with rules inc no politics? Although easy for me to say as don't have to moderate it.

Very true. The poor mods will just have to keep a tight rein over that, as they do already with the rest of the forum here anyway.

With some things being very close to people's hearts, and equally close for those on any opposing sides, what you fear is really valid.

    Like, tea making.

Does the tea bag go into the mug first, or does the milk? (Ducking for cover)

I've seen religion and politics ruin a good forum.

What in the world was I thinking when I typed that... Geez. It came out wrong, but I also can't help but ask myself, "why did I say it like that?"

Come to think of it, BIG thanks for the forum Mods and Admins for considering the idea. Whichever way the decision goes, it's cool. In some ways NOT doing it might be safer.
