Clay pebbles hold moisture/feed that’s why roots attach themselves to the balls. They a also misshaped and pour us so also trap oxygen in small pockets in the surface. They do have there benefits and as said before they do help with drainage. There’s lots of different ways of using them so it all depends on how ur using them as to ur benefits. Marbles or the other glass things would help for drainage in the bottom of the pot but wouldn’t have the benefits of expanded clay balls elsewhere. Hope it helps. Hope ur all having a fantastic day

I'm about to give up on clay pebbles and go back to coco.
Roots don't seem to like clay for me.

The clay balls need to be washed multiple times and need to soak in ph'd water for 24 hours.
They can cause havoc with ph real easy.
Most of the plants I've grown have had a layer of clay pebbles on top of the growing medium. If you have an inch or two on top they will block root aphids from getting down into your roots. Actually they block any insect that has a larva stage in your roots. So you won't get thrips or anything like that. They also help aerate the water as you pour it through them.
