Since the UK seem to have removed peat from it's bags of compost, the stuff is now pretty shite
What are other people using? (that they've had any success with!)

Have you tried Levingtons John Innes No2 M_C?
It’s gone up a bit in price recently but still only £6 per 25kg bag or 3 for £15 in most garden centres, B&Ms also stock it if you have one near you. It’s the only soil I ever use and I’ve had good results consistently for well over a decade. I’ve germinated seeds in it, rooted cuttings and taken plants through to week 4 of flower with no nutrients at all, just regular pot ups. It used to be quite popular on uk grow forums but these days I think I’m the only one still using it.
Not sure why it went out of fashion, the formula hasn’t changed. It’s quite gritty too so no need to add Perlite either.

Hey M_C
My buddy down south works in R&D in a soil lab... They create soil blends for the BIG guys like Scott's/Miracle grow. All lab stuff where he grows thousands of whatever the hell they are testing what works best. He's been telling me about an additive called Hydrafiber for a while now as peat becomes more "taboo" due to the nature of its harvesting. I've sent him a text asking if it's yet available across the pond. They don't typically have phones on em while working but I'm sure I'll hear back from today.
Hydrafiber is made of sawdust... kinda. So it lacks the humic acids but it's outperforming in many of the tests he showed me. May have to add them back in with additves. hmm
If it's an option, you would be cutting edge!
I'll get back to ya.

I reckon you should be ok with the peat free with a decent feed like PM Oldtimers..
B&Q Verve multi (peat free) is on for £7 for 50 litres at the Moment, they do one called (Good Home) too, no clue what that is. I'm waiting to see if the 125 litre bags are coming into stock..
They also have Verve Container and basket 50 liters on offer for £5.50 I might try that...Looks like they are all going peat free now including Levingtons.

Did you know that the formula changes depending on the bag size Bud?
The smaller bags, 50L & below are, now, utter shite & the 100L & above are just shite...
All the peat free composts I have tried have crap water retention & crap growing abilities. They seem fine for pot plants that grow year on year but total rubbish for fruit & veg

Yeah I did know it was graded different according to bag sizes, i've seen it with my own eyes...Think I might start loading my existing compost with feed and re-use it if i can get rid of the bastard vine weevil grubs i've been suffering with the last couple of years (I'll be doing a feature on these horrible little bastards on here soon so keep your eyes peeled)...It's a toss up between buying nematodes or replacing the lot which is going to cost quite a few quid with 6 half oak barrels, dozens of pots and hanging baskets not to mention the window boxes and troughs...
