I wash the pre filter every 6 mouths, loads of washing up liquid and then rinse it out in the bath.
you would be surprised how much crap they absorb.
Mine go in a pillow case and into the washing machine on cool

All the dust a pre filter catches doesn't clog your activated carbon so I wouldn't go without one.
I also recommend using a similar filter on your air intake to reduce the amount of dust that gets into your groom in the first place
I'm taking down my tent at the moment, and just hand washed my pre filter in the sink.
The water was basically black first run, second run was brown, third was still a little murky, but clear after a little rinse.
I think that was just two grows worth. I normally wash it after every grow, but I think I skipped it last time......for some reason
