Congrats on your new 4-inch filter and exhaust fan for your 4x4 tent! In general, it's a good idea to run the filter continuously to ensure effective odor control.Happy growing!

I have a temperature controller connected to my extractor. With a controller you can set it to come on full when the room hits a certain temp and just tick over when it's below that temp. At night, while in veg, it'll just tick over or you can have it right off, but in bloom, especially when buds are looking tight, it stays on so as to prevent bud rot.
