If you want a quiet fan always get a larger fan than needed then rig it up to a controller and run it as slow as you can get away with,so if you need a 100mm fan get a 200mm and run it at 1/4 the speed and you'll get roughly the same air flow as a 100mm running at full blast, and use the idea above and it'll be even quieter and use bungie cords as suggested as fans can cause alot of vibration and low frequancy hum which you might not hear but your neighbours might,i use them for all my fans even my clip-on circulation fans which cause quite a hum when just clipped on to a braket.

bungie cords are your best friend when it come to mounting fans.

Interesting thought, however when talking about frequencies of sound, winding a motor down, using voltage, as most fan controllers do, you create more noise, ie the lower you run it, the more resistance, therefore more sound. Although the rush of air sound might sound really loud, its not a 'sub sound' which means it carries no vibration - and no noise. When my fan is on full its loud in the space, however 2m from the space i hear nothing, in veg when i turn the fan down to balance my humidity i can hear the restricted motor hum of the fan upwards of 3-4 m away.

Bungie cords do rock, i use old recycled straps with plastic buckles from rucksacks, i find that does the same job, bungies are easier to aquire, i am just a tight bastard lol, waste not want not.....

This is a superb post now, lots of different ideas and solutions....

Another consideration in noise reduction is making sure the ducting is attached with a strong jubilee clip then you can really pull the ducting straight to reduce both noise and drag
Also try to reduce the length of ducting and minimise the angle of any bends.
I will try the foam out in the next few weeks seen as though i have a load spare, and report back with my findings
A further tip for anyone on a budget with a spare roll of fibreglass insulation is to keep the fibreglass in its wrapping then remove some from the middle to allow you to bury the fan through the middle of it then stuff it back in and tape it all up.
