Ok so heres a way for all us stealthy growers to be even more stealthy. oh yeah!!
Ive done this a few times before for a mate (who gave me the gro bug) and its normally done using expanding foam but for the purposes of this guide ill be using polystyrene. but the method is exactly the same but for a few small points that i will explain as we go along.
you will need:
1- Rvk fan
2- Some duct/elec tape - or cling film if using the expanding foam method
2- Some ducting
3- A box to fit your fan inside - ive only ever used a tightfitting box due to size but i imagine the bigger the box the more silence you get.
4- Polystyrene/Expanding foam - the foam does offer more silence than the polystyrene but i dont have enough here and my fan will be inside my box this grow so no need for complete silence this time.
1st thing you wanna do is tape up all the joints/gaps in around your fan - if using expanding foam use cling film to wrap the whole fan up making sure no foam can get in any gaps at all.
Now you wanna get your ducting on both ends - make sure they are secure and wont come off EVER!!! use duct clips if you have em
Boxtime!! get a CD (nice snug fit for most ducting) and mark a circle in both ends of your box and cut out with a stanley blade
Like this
so now your left with a box with two holes for your ducting at each end.
After thats done insert the Rvk into your box - should be looking like this. - take your plug off the lead and feed cable through the side of your box then wire plug back up.
Tape up one end of the box with plenty of duct tape and leave the other end open so you can put your polystyrene in - if using expanding foam tape up the WHOLE BOX!! then make a 1" hole in all 8 corners of your box - this helps you get the foam into all the corners of the box and also gives you some breathing space in regards to the foam expanding - had a few box's explode on me before i used to punch holes lol
I normally use a cheese grater to get the polystyrene as small as possible so the pic below is just an example - try to break it up more - you want it to be really packed in tight, if you can use the loose polystyrene you find in beanbags.
If your using polystyrene for this then your almost done - all you need to do now is tape up your box hook it up and thats that - a near silent Rvk
If your using expanding foam - now your box should be covered in duct tape and have a hole in each corner on BOTH ends - meaning 8 holes in all - time to inject your expanding foam - i usually go for a few squirts in each hole until you can see it expanding out from the holes themselves - you need to stop when this happens lol - wait for foam to dry - cut off excess foam from holes - and there you have it - a silent Rvk.
To add to this try getting some bungy cords (elastic rope with hooks on each end) to hang your box'd Rvk and filter - makes all the difference.
