I've used both mediums over the years and my current preference is for the jiffy pellets and here's why;
jiffy pellets are naturally acidic while rockwool has to be pre soaked in ph balanced water
jiffy pellets already contain nutes so when the proto roots emerge the clone can start feeding immediately
Jiffy pellets hold more moisture than rockwool so need less watering
Tha main difference between the two mediums is the water/air ratio.
Jiffy pellets are better at holding water than air
rockwool is better at holding air than water
The key to quickly and succesfully rooting clones is to get the air/water balance right and keep it right.
Too much air or too much water in the medium will delay rooting.
Thiat is why aeroponic cloners work so well, the fine mist sprayed onto the rooting zone ensures a good balance of water/oxygen and fast rooting.
Now I want to make a very important point about using jiffy pellets.
The main drawback of pellets is their tendency to become waterlogged and so to avoid this do not water them until they have nearly dried out and then mist both clone and pellet in hydrogen peroxide solution . The peroxide will greatly increase the free oxygen available in the pellet and create very good conditions for root formation.
So I would normally bet on the jiffy pellet but only if it is treated with peroxide, otherwise it could go either way.
