Yeah, when the lampholder is connected as designed it's earthed through the casing, but once disconnected it's not earthed, so best would be to earth the lamp holder to the ballast just to be on the safe side.
i see, just need to get some flex

    Greetings everybody!

    I would appreciate some advice.

Basically, this is my problem. I've just moved house and I'm beginning my grow in my loft. Now, the loft did not have a plug in there but it did have a light. I've got a friend's dad round to install a plug. I told him it was for a train set I was getting from my uncle... He said that the plug he would install would be enough to run a train set but 'don't plug in a kettle'!

This has got me concerned. As I know next to nothing about about electricity, could anybody advise as to whether what I'm wanting to do with what I have is feasible.

From the plug (and through a surge contactor thingy? I odn't know it's official title) I intend to run:

    2 x 125w enviros
    1 x 4" RVK
    1 x rotating fan
    1 x dehumidifier
    1 x oil radiator (optional)

Am I just pi%sing in the wind trying to do all of this through one plug?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated, even something I could tell the electrician to make it possible.

    Many thanks,

    T.R.F.

Do not attempt to grow like that!!!!!!

If he said don't plug in a kettle, for sure growing equipment is out of the question. You will also share a circute with other household appliances which is not a good idea in the first place.

Here is what you must do:
Call a certified electrician and tell him to install a dedicated circuit directly to your loft. this should be the way to go. Tell him its for trains or whatever.

    Good luck

Make sure there will be RCD protection there. On any case, once you got your leccy sorted I recommend one of these (RCD +Surge + Thermal cut out protection)made by masterplug and can be found at B&Q:

How much am I looking to shell out for a circuit board installation in my loft, roughly speaking?

Around 200 quid depends on the job/size of your house (ie how long it takes).
