I'd suggest you contact them, admit the oversight on your part but explain that things are extremely tight at the moment and you would be able to pay a token amount of, for example, £5 each month to clear the debt. Bet they take you up on the offer
Not exactly getting away without paying, I know....
If you live in the UK, then you can contact your local CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau). They offer free advice and can contact this company on your behalf. They will most likely advise you to make a small nominal regular payment to pay off this debt (the CAB can arrange the payment for you), as non-payment will affect your credit rating, which in turn will affect your credit puchasing power in the future.
Like marmalade dreams says the origional £45 will increase, as these Debt Recovery Agencies can add interest as well as an administration fee. You should also tell the CAB about the letters that you are receiving (which are often written in a threatining and intimidation manner). Unfortunately this debt will remain with you (for ever) unless it is paid. Debt can be sold to other Debt Recovery Agencies, adding more additional administration fee's. The origional £45 will increase over time if it has not already! You may be facing a debt in to hundreds of pounds the longer you ignore it.
Underground, Overground, Wombling free.
