Well I bought a home brew kit making lager/etc..It cost me under £68 for everything I need and got the Head Cracker ale at 7.0%

can't wait to taste this ..one of the strongest ales on the home brew scene.. most beers are about 3% to 5%

Nice one Up2. I'm keen to know how you get on with that.

I've just been sticking to the old Tom Caxton Best Bitter kits but I double the sugar. For the last few brews I've used 1 kg of normal white sugar & 1 kg of a mix of Demerera & light Muscovado sugars. They've come out really nice with much more depth of flavour than the regular stuff. OGs have been around 1048 - 1050. In fact I had a party last year & everyone ended up drinking the homebrew in preference to the tins they'd brought. I was quite chuffed with that.

I'd read a diary of your journey. I'm not the best at commenting though.

I never tried the specialist brewing sugar, but I did sometimes make invert sugar (basically boil it with a bit of citric acid or cream of tartar). Whether it was worth the extra hassle I really couldn't say now (it's been a while!).

I haven't made any home brew since 1990 ..long time..I remember using bottles and caps and the bloody caps kept on coming off like a bomb..beer everywhere..too hot in the loft I guess
