Default DIY Carbon Filter & Fan for under £10

Ok, so I couldnt find a DIY for a cheap carbon filter so I made one.

The total cost, including postage cane to less than £10 including fans and with a 400W HPS keeps the space at 78f (25c) using a passive intake. Humidity is 49% (+/- 4%) lights on of off. Click image for larger version.

    I used
    a 12"x 8" tupperware tub from ASDA £1.05
    2 x 54cfm computer fans http://www.ebuyer.com/63281-120mm-bl...ctor-pfs12bk4p £2.07
    a 570 x 470 cooker hood filter http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cooker-Hoo...item45f9988f28 £2.98
A piece of mesh I had in the shed. (optional, garden wire will do the same job)
And a roll of duct tape.

1 Mark out the cutout for the fans on the body of the sandwhich box.

3 Mark out the size of the cutout for the mesh/wire in the box lid. nb, this must be at least the same size as the area cut out for the fans otherwise it will slow the fans down.
4 Cut out the hole for the filter

6 Screw the fans into place. I used 3 pieces of wood so that the unit could be mounted into a heating duct. One at each side housing 2 screws from the fans and one in the middle, housing the other 2 screws for the fans.

7 Tape the mesh into place. Wire can be used since it is only there to stop the filter from falling out.

    12 Skin up

Oh, almost forgot, you will need a power supply. I used a 5v mobile phone charger. These units will take 7v each, increasing the fan speed. At 5v, they are silent.

I like this DIY job because it can be used over time and again. It is effective in stopping smells escaping the grow space and replacing the filter is a case of popping off the lid, doing a bit of cutting of filter and taping in place and the jobs a good un again.

Hope this helps some dudes/dudettes out there. I also hope the pics are in the right place!

The fans move 54cfm each, giving 108 cubic ft per min.
The space has a volume of 24 cubic ft so the air is exchanged more than 4x per minute.
I dont know what the thermal calculations are but the ambient temps when I fitted it for him were 19.5c on my car, which is 67f I think.
I was surprised how efficient they are but knowing a bit about building computers, you soon get to know larger, slower fans are much more effective than smaller, faster fans.

@ Babybud, on the link I gave, the details of the fans performance is there somewhere. I am sure there is a dB rating too.

@ Forest, I hear what you are saying fella! I used one similar to this for a while a long time ago. It did the job but was not with a 400W. The initial idea was for a fan & filter for a stealth grow. My buddy, whose grow it is, is skint and cannot afford a decent fan & filter so I set this up for him. It is doing the job so far and if we have to load granules in it, It is just a case of adapting the current charcoal filter into a bag shape.
I was over his place today, temps outside were 20c and the groom temp was 26 so heat wise it is working. The other day when I set it up, the smell was bad. He lives in some flats and you could smell the grow as soon as you went in the front door. It is gone now. Though he is only on the 3rd week of flower with some Blue Cheese. A good test I think!!!!!
I will update on how it deals with smelly plants in a few weeks.

@Pugz, the 54cfm is at 5v. I dont know what the cfm will be at 7v.
The box does not hum, totally silent since the fans are 120mm & slow moving and are fitted tightly into place.

I have to say this project is really for stealth grows, not for something like a tent. If you have a tent and want proper cooling/aroma control, get a Rhyno & Ruck, they are about the best bang for your bucks.

How long do you estimate those 6 layers to last? i have just ordered some but have a smaller space with 1 80mm pc fan for some extraction. not that it was much money
