Good find Riff.
As it happens i'm using the B&Q specialist multi with JI no3 so that made me happy.
I must say It does look & feel like good soil ... I'll let y'all know soon enough !.

That they are mate, but i'm sure a lot of growers use these composts more than the expensive specialised stuff. So its always use ful to know which works better.
Cheers MT, i just wish i had found this guide before i went out and bought that shit Focus compost.
Damn my bad luck.

If you don't have B&Q local, you could go back to focus and get levingtons with john innes if they stock it? I got mine from there, going from advice given here.. Only downside I see is it seems to more stones than I'd like

Boy did i live to regret that statement !!. I've had 11, once perfect & beautiful plants in this stuff for just over a week & it's nearly killed them off.
Turns out (Thx to Bom for sharing your wisdom) that this stuff is made by westlands & is a bastard !!.
DONT BUY IT !!!
Trust me m8, you were the lucky one, i wish they'd run out when i was looking.
I have used the levingtons & my plants loved it .. unfortunately i cant get it locally anymore or i'd still be using it.
Avoid the B&Q specialist range like the plague.

Damn MT that really sucks. Are they savable do you know?!
Boy am I sure I didn't go along the B&Q lines.. Oh so nearly apart from your advice on the levingtons! Think I might stock up on a few years supply of levingtons by the looks of things (maybe become mail order? haha)! B&Q? PFT no thanks

And this is why I don't mind paying a little extra for dutch soil because if things go wrong it can end up costing more than a few quid, sorry to hear about your plants MT, hope they pull through ok.

I hope your plants get better MT. At least we know to avoid B&Q for soil now!
I've only used Biobizz allmix and Plagron Batmix so far so I don't know too much about the soils. I'll be honest I want to try a cheaper one next so I might be trying John Innes soil next as that seems alright!

Damn MT, sorry to hear about your soil troubles, looks like we're in the same boat but with different soils.
As you said , in previous grows i've also used normal commercial muck and not had too many probs with it, and after seeing the results from a few of grows on here using the more expensive stuff i'm quickly being converted .
I will defo be prising my wallet open a few extra inches to splash out a few extra bucks for my next grow then hopefully i'll find out if it's me fucking up or the compost was to blame.
Another problem i'm having is getting the shitting stuff wet again after it's dried out, the water just seems to run straight out the bottom.
Soakability is a big fat Zero.

You need to break the surface tension of the water when your soil dries out, you can do this by adding a drop of washing up liquid to a gallon of water iirc.

Sorry I'm being a bit of a thicky newby, but looking at Riff Raff's post with the Which compost trials for 2008 - what's the difference between B&Q John Innes no.2, Homebase John Innes no.2 and Levington John Innes no.2? Are they all different composts? If so, bloody confusing! And does one have to mix 30% vermiculite/perlite with all of them?
Thanks,
Sarah x
