Hello peeps right I did promise I would do this a while ago so here it is
How to repack a Carbon Filter.
The one we are going to do is a Rhino
Place the filter with the open end facing up like so.....
Have a look round the top rim & find the rivets there should be 4 or more like this.....
Then take a drill with a suitable sized drill bit make sure it is a good quality one as you do not want to put undue pressure on the filter when drilling them out....
Place the bit on the rivet center & drill the rivet all the way through which should then look like so.....
Carry on till you have drilled all the rivets out on the top rim.
Then drill a hole about half an inch down from the top lip & do the same the opposite side like so....
Then take a small link chain or something similar & attach it to the filter with bolts like so......
Then take a hammer & tap the chain from below so the end can comes off the filter like so.......
The reason for doing it like this is the filter walls are very thin & can quite easily bend out of shape & if this happens you will have a nightmare trying to reassemble the filter.
Once you have removed the end can this is what will be facing you.......
Remove the foam ring to expose this the inner sock.....
Roll the sock back like this & you will see the heart of the filter the carbon......
Tip the carbon out of the filter taking care not to let the sock fall out......
This is how it will look when all the carbon is out of the filter.......
Then take your new activated carbon which I should stress should be of good quality & be no less than 3mm & no larger than 4mm if you use any smaller it will restrict the air flow through the the filter & any bigger & the filter will not remove smells effectively......
Fill the filter to within a few inches of the top like so......
Then roll the sock back over & refit the top foam ring then stick your washing machine on to a spin cycle place the filter on top of the washing machine for the full spin cycle this will have the effect of shaking the carbon & packing it well in to the filter, once you have done this top up the filter back to the 2 inches from the top again then refit the foam ring.
Then take the end can & tap it back on to the filter here is where you will see why we removed the end can with the chain like we did because if the filter has been pushed out of shape you will have a nightmare trying to refit the end can.
Make sure you use a soft faced mallet as it is very easy to bend the soft aluminium
Make sure the holes all line up with each other again like so....
Then take a small bolt nut & washer & pass it through the holes with the washer on the in side & then tighten them all together like so....you can rivet it back together but in my experience it makes it a nightmare when you have to repack again.
Do this to the remaining holes until it is all bolted back together don't worry about the 2 holes we made to remove the end can as the fan will cover these when placed back in side the filter.
Run some duct tape round the rim to cover the bolt heads & refit the pre filter then that is the filter all done & ready for another good few grows.
