    Default Nft tips for noobies

Since this is the new section a thought since axe man got it goin a better start making posts in it so a thought a thread mentioned by trigger on another post a would put up some do and donts for new guys setting up and everyone can add to it with more pointers
Always make sure the tank is level when setting up and that u have the lid on the tank the right way so the water runs of
Then check the tank us level across the way with a spirit level so the water is even going down
1 layer of root mat is fine and leave it long to stop dripping noises as it falls into tanks
Always make sure u have enough roots before putting them on your system or it will slow things down and they will soak on the water
Once enough roots u can place them in the tank and a good tip by trigger is put some tile spacers on each corner to raise it of the tank slightly this will get the roots growing down onto the tank and stop the cube being soaked if this happens the roots can be slow coming down onto the tray I have noticed if no tile spacers just put a clay ball on each corner I do this a week before a put them on the tanks as since its raised all the roots are hanging out of the cube ready to go on
Water flow can vary every grower is different some start with a timer 25 min on and 2 hour of till the roots are over the tray then put it on 24/7 other put it on like that right away and also U can have it on a very slow drip or trickle it can also work well at the start all these will work for u
Red temps around 19 is spot on for nft I have found anything over 23 and it just start to cause problems so if u can get around that temp u should be fine
When a start on nft ec 0.4 with some rhizo works good for me
This is all just ma opinion with using these so there are plenty other ways a just wanted to get avpost up and start the section of so feel free to comment orcas to ma post or point out am talking crap lol hey that's what am here for
Hope this is anyway can help anyone out starting up a nft

    Smokeys top tip:

Make sure you use something better than the correx provided with the system - It lets light in badly and its not very supportive. I use a 5mm foam. My friend puts some 'black out' over the top of the correx or 'visqueen' would work too. And I think it's trigger I've seen use Kingspan instead. All good methods

Like marley says about rez temps, they are very important in NFT a aquarium water chiller is a good investment if you got the spare cash. Or camping ice blocks, frozen bottles of water as a cheap alternative.

When your seeds are ready for rockwell pre-soak starter cubes for 30mins in PH 5.8 water, a 24hr soak is required for the bigger cubes.

Also a hand held steam cleaner is a good buy for cleaning all your gear after a grow good hygiene = healthy disease free plants.

In the early stages of the grow you can half fill the tank as the plants won't take on as much solution as a flowering plant would. This way your veg nutrients will last you as twice as long as they would if you filled the tank up fully.

Also I find that regular changes help minimise nutrient deficiencies so make sure you change the tank every 7-14 days if you are using a recirculating system.

Yes nutty i like to do a res change every 7 days, once there is enough root mass to affect PH i get a nice PH drift from 5.8 to about 6.3 then i reset PH to 5.8 on res change day.

Not sure if this is a proper tip yet untill I have tested it more, but during the switch over I have just started to add both Canna Aqua Vega A+B and Canna Aqua Flores A+B to my res. I believe that this way the plant will decide which nutrients it wants rather than not having a choice because I just added 1 and not the other.

I have just done this to my 2 plants in the tent and it hasn't hurt them any so far. I'm hoping that they won't slow down like they usually do during the switch over and that the flowers will start forming quicker than it usually does also.

I will post results from each grow from now on.

^^^ i,ve done this a few times also . just topping up my veg tank from the start of 12/12 with flower nutes, works fine. another tip is allways give your set up a dummy run to make sure everything is dialled in, also when plants are very small then sometimes we struggle for humidity so try using a 5 litre bottle with bottom cut off and spray inside bottle with water, that should help

Nice one trigger, although my idea wasn't original its good to know that others have tried this and that it works fine.
