One tip that should be mentioned is always get the biggest res you can fit in your space as the bigger your tank, the easier it is to keep everything stable. I found this out the hard way!!

A bit of genius there,I gave up on cubes coz they were permanently soaked and eventually grew mould.I went on to grow in 3inch plastic pots usig coir/perlite 50/50.When the pots were full of roots I transplant into another 3inch pot with the base cut out .This I placed onto the spreader mat.It works quite well.I was growing bud on a stick, that is clones taken on 12/12 .They stop flowering while they are rooting then continue as soon as they hit the nutes.Very productive and fast. You end up with a sea of green of smaller and tightly grown plants. Its a bit hit and miss as to the distancing and eventual height, and there are some varieties more suited than others, but I had some outstanding results

Res temps are a piece of piss to control now, I have it down to a fine art. 1 500ml bottle of frozen water every 4-5 hours = constant res temp range of between 17-20 degrees. For anyone who struggles to freeze bottles of water the solution is to freeze plastic trays of water, break up the ice into chunks then place a good thick layer of ice in your tray, put your bottles on top and then put ice all over and around them. Job done. Also, drain off 1/2 a litre from your tank to allow for the bottle and it does not mess with your water level.

when you first start with your nft, your going to have very few roots and foliage to make any difference to your ec so i like to keep mine at 0.4 ec until it starts moving on the metre, its just a safe way ,

Someone mentioned this in another thread somewhere, think it was Trigger or Boycie but not 100% sure.

You can increase the run off in your NFT tank by slightly raising the end with the pump and delivery tube in. The higher you raise it, the more run off you will get.

Note: Be sure not to raise the tank too high or when the res runs low, the pump may stop delivering the solution to your plants. ALWAYS remember to check your res levels daily when doing this, if you don't already do this that is.

just a little article i found on root rot Root Rot
What causes root rot? Low Oxygen levels. (DO) Desolved Oxigen. Temp's are the main reason for root rot, Low temps will lower the DO levels and high temps will cause low DO levels. Keeping temps between 65 to 72 will allow MAX DO levels or max o2 for roots. (Thank you so much for the information syko2! has provided above!)
Over watering also causes root rot, Root Rot infects parts of the roots, which then spread infecting the whole roots causing death, Root Rot can be caused by to high of temps in hydro as well as over watering. Not enough drainage in your soil can cause Root Rot, even signs of it looking over watered, because the soil holds moisture to long for the roots to dry out. So these 3 things are all connected together. The main one that causes everything is over watering. Once you find out you have root rot, depending on how bad the problem is, you can add H202( Hydrogen Peroxide) with your water or hydro setup to kill the bacteria caused from root rot. If the plant is severely taken over by it, there are only a few things you can do, cut off the roots affected by it depending on if its hair roots or tap roots, use H202 mixed with water in a different bucket and use it for a dip to help kill off bacteria before putting it back in the system, also note the system needs to be cleaned out if you have root rot.... using products like sm90 will kill off the root rot, using h202 in your system does more harm than good, it kills off the bad bacteria and good thus creating a worse off problem after the h202 has been overran, h202 if used in a hydro/aero system must be replaced everyday due to it disapating from the air. After it disaptes the plants defensive system has been killed off by the h202 causing the root rot that was not killed by the h202 left and thus overruns the plants root system. So again h202 should never be used in the hydro system, be kept in the system, although it is safe to use to rid of algae growth in rockwool and other mediums, but never be used in with the root zones regularly. Sm90 is a good product you can use to kill off root rot. Hydroguard helps protect and there are many other products that work as well, hydroguard is one of the more popular ones that work.

so if you decide to use h2o2 then only use it for an hour or so to flush the plants through then back to base nutes

The main disadvantage with NFT systems, especially in a grow room environment is the fact that pump failure is likely to strike at some point. The reason this tends to happen is that NFT systems are packaged with small flow rate pumps; cheap springs to mind but this is not technically fair. The plants only need a small delivery of water at a constant rate and the small pumps are all that can be used on a small NFT system. Now as the pump is perpetually on, the pump sees a lot of action over the course of its life.
This coupled with the fact that you are then adding dissolved salts in the tank and in turn you are possibly in a hard water area, you get precipitation of the salts and the calcium that build up on and around the impeller of the pump. Once this impeller begins to attract precipitation, it is not long until it either gives up spinning completely or that it does not deliver enough water to satisfy the plants’ needs, resulting in crop failure. Pump failure can be overcome through regular cleaning and maintenance of the pump or indeed regular replacements of the pumps. As mentioned earlier, these are very inexpensive pumps and therefore can be regularly replaced without financial worry. its allways handy to have a spare pump, theres two advantages over a spare pump, 1 is being able to swap over while you clean the one in tank and of course its handy incase of pump failure

Another advantage with having two pumps is the ability to change the tank twice as quick!
